Personal history
Growing up in the Tabaxi district in Oseroy, Bold was pushed out of his impoverished family’s house just before his second birthday. He was taken under the wing of another friendly youth and wound up in a hostel of sorts, run by a fat old retired Tabaxi soldier named Cadence of Water. Cadence had lived a full life as a soldier and had many tales to tell. However, whenever any person he considered to be one of his den thought out loud about joining up with the Pillarguard, Cadence would shut down the idea immediately, refusing to explain himself. This was the only reason Bold had avoided joining up at 2 or 3 years of age. Bold particularly bonded with Cadence of Water and won the old man’s heart as well.
The hostel was full of youngsters of all races, but non-Tower origins prevailed, many of whom were abused by the 'Guard and the system in general. To defend themselves, Cadence taught them some basic hand to hand techniques to help them escape from dangerous situations. Bold proved to be an astute pupil and managed to coax Cadence into mentoring him in formal combat techniques. He was able to pick up several weapons rather easily, but quickly has an affinity for the warhammer.
His mentor instructed him in primarily defensive maneuvers for the aid of his den-mates. Bold found himself drawn to the forms and formalities of man to man combat. He enjoyed interjecting himself into situations in defense of even non-den mates. This got him in a small bit of trouble a couple of times before a sharp eyed soldier recognized his potential and started planting the seeds of enrollment.
When his mentor found out he was considering signing up, he refused to teach him any further. After a few weeks, Bold blew up at Cadence and walked out. That day, at age 5, he signed up with the Pillarguard.
He quickly distinguished himself thanks to his strict instruction with Cadence. But along with recognition from above came envy and spite from alongside. Petty confrontations rose and fell away often, sometimes resulting in friendships. Once, though, it ended in a permanent rivalry. A human woman, named Margo Price, turned against Bold and he was never quite sure why. It didn’t really matter as the rivalry was persistent and after training they were assigned to different patrols in the same dispatch. So closely aligned, the competitiveness could not help but flourish.
Before anyone really understood it, their two patrols had risen in profile and effectiveness, but with far different reputations. Each had risen to the rank of caporal and were on a fast track to Banner-bearer. Under Bold’s command patrols were often completed peacefully, and with as much discretion as he was allowed. The people would approach him with their problems.
Margo took a different approach. Under her command, people would shy away and have to be coerced into cooperating, and many had to be released due to her overzealous tactics. Still she followed the law, and both patrols were becoming more and more effective.
Margo wasn’t the only one who didn’t appreciate Bold’s light hand with petty offenses and equal treatment of tower races. Despite his success, he was criticized from both his subordinates and his superiors. The strain wore on Bold and eventually he was struggling under the pressure to be more forceful than necessary. He started fantasizing about how he could leave his service early. He found himself embittered with the Pillarguard and what they stood for, the oppression of the lower class and the protection of the wealthy. He longed to return to Cadence, but was ashamed and unsure of the reception he would receive.
That was the space he was in when he met Brom on a barstool in a place no one would know him. After too many drinks and too little food, Bold let Brom in on a few of his goofy ideas to get out. They bonded over the ideas and soon had a regular habit of drinking and scheming empty, but deeply satisfying schemes against the 'Guard before Bold would stumble out to sober up before his next shift.
His performance began suffering, and his superiors noticed. To try to inspire him to snap out of it they decided to include him on a special service out in the country. When Bold shared this with Brom, they quickly hatched a scheme to fake Bold’s death while out on the assignment. A fall off a boat, or a cliff would work nicely, they agreed to be fluid and roll with it. Reporting for duty, Bold was disappointed to find himself under the command of Margo. She was not kind to him, and the worst details became his, despite his rank. This did, however, provide the opportunity to exit himself from service.
The trash detail encompassed first collecting and then disposing of the trash over the cliffs into the sea. A simple slip and some clever rigging and his assistants would all see him “fall” over the edge and be free from his service forever. Things did not work out that way, however. Margo had received reports that some undesirables were picking through the trash while it was piled at the cliff edge. She chose that day to personally oversee their dispersal. It was unnecessarily brutal and without willing it, Bold found he had inserted himself between one of Margo’s cadets and a harengon who had found a nearly whole loaf of bread. Margo ordered him to step aside, but as the cadet stepped forward Bold reacted and knocked him off his feet. Seeing Margo’s face he knew he was doomed, but he was also standing right over his rigging. He went for it. He did it well, too. But from behind his camouflage he saw Margo’s face lean out. She did not look convinced, but she also didn’t spot him in his nook.
Brom picked him up and they headed back to Brom’s home, where they decided it was too risky to stay in Osoroy. So they packed up and headed further south. They made their way to Bezokh after some time where they found a tortle and a harengon in intense duress at the hands of some prejudicial Tower race thugs. Bold couldn't help stepping in and Brom backed up his friend. The grateful Unafs (Quincy and Beeroy) accepted Brom and Bold's aid, but the four of them continued to encounter a streak of bad luck and narrowly escaped the city limits with their lives. They found a temporary hideout and tried to decide where they could go until the heat died down.
All four companions were needing a place to lay low, though none of them knew where they might go with very little money and few prospects. After a couple days in hiding, Brom received a curious message from an old family friend. After reading it, he announced that he had their destination: Grasmere.
They arrived in Grasmere and followed the letter's directions to... The Stewed Prune. The place was a dump but the roof didn't leak (much) so they worked to fix it up and re-opened for business a couple of nights ago.
