Being born between the worlds of Elves and Humans was a hard start in life for anyone, not an Elf, not a human, astride both races but not truly either one and never fully accepted by those around him; things only got harder from there for Thomas.
Raised by a Human mother, a doctor, who loved him like only a mother could, and an Elven father, a magistrate who loved his family, but was rarely at home. Thomas was a typical, adventurous child, always amazed by the surrounding world and more often than not getting into trouble within it.
When he was 6 years old, a troupe of traveling Wizards passed through his town, entertaining the townsfolk with stories, lore and magical shows in return for room, board, and a few coins. Thomas was enamored with this group and spent as much time as possible in their company, listening to their stories and watching their shows.
After 3 days though, the Wizards moved on, and life returned to some semblance of normality; to Thomas’s Chagrin.
He went their camp, excited to see if they had left anything behind but all he found was a burned-out campfire and some holes where tents had been pitched. Wandering the abandoned camp he thought of the last few days and the enjoyment these Wizards had provided him. He wished he could be a wizard like them...
Leaving the camp he kicked at a discarded water pail on his way out and noticed a silver glint under its rim; a silver ring! This must-have belong to the traveling Wizards and what had seemed like a horrible day for Thomas, soon got better. He kept the ring to himself though, telling no one of his find and daring not to show anyone for fear of having it taken from him.
On the same day that Thomas found the ring, his father left for work as usual. The thing is, where in he would usually return around the 5th or 6th hour of the eve, this night he did not. Many hours passed, then days, then weeks and no trace was found.
The Courts had no idea where he had gone and an investigation into his disappearance came and went without conclusion.
Years passed and the mystery faded into a distant memory. All but Thomas and his mother forgot the magistrate as anything other than a curious tale.
6 years later, when Thomas was 12, the troupe of traveling Wizards returned to the town with their entertainments. As much as he had longed to see these magicians again their return brought fresh pain and memories to Thomas and his mother who searched for, but still could not find his father.
Thomas questioned the Wizards, but none were able to answer him and instead of being captivated by their conjuring he became frustrated and sad. Again, like last time, after a few days, the Wizards left and Thomas returned to their campsite. He found nothing this time but in their absence started to believe that if only he had the power they wielded that maybe he would find his father.
And so he told himself on that day that he would set out to unravel the mysteries of the world and learn Magic for himself. But how? The wizards had left and as far as he was aware there were no magic users in the town.
While in school one of his few friends, Kaylib, told him of a strange old hermit who lived on the outskirts of town. Rumour had it that this man was a Wizard of great power who had retreated from society and settled in the area: Thomas sought him out.
Initially, the old hermit had no interest in Thomas’s plight and even littler interest in training him as a magician but this did little to dissuade young Thomas. Each day after school, he returned, each day the hermit would tell him to go away. He spent months persuading the old man to allow him to become his apprentice and either by attrition or by a warming of the old hermit to the enthusiastic boy, he relented and agreed to teach him.
The hermit was not easy to live with at first. He provided Thomas with the tools needed to learn Magic, but was otherwise mostly unhelpful. Added to this, the hermit would often disappear at random, for days or sometimes weeks at a time.
As Thomas grew in his powers though, generally self-taught, the hermit began to trust him more and more and even started to offer advice – as well as his opinions – on the local townsfolk.
After a decade of companionship, a fledgling friendship began to grow between the pair but he was still young and did not understand why his friend had to leave all the time. When questioned on this, the hermit would simply reply that it was necessary, and hinted that Thomas may need to do the same, as his powers could draw undesirable attention.
This went on for several more decades, with first the hermit, then one day Thomas, and finally both disappearing when the impulse took them. They did so without saying a word to each other, returning only when their instincts told them it was safe. Thomas began to learn that these disappearances coincided with visitors or travelers arriving in the Town – They didn’t always react to the same visitors, though. The hermit would not answer any questions on this, only that he was glad that Thomas was beginning to learn to trust his instincts.
Despite becoming accustomed to the more relaxed way of life, Thomas began to yearn for more knowledge than he could learn from his old friend – he once again became interested in the townsfolk and the outside world. The hermit discouraged this behavior as much as possible, but Thomas could not quell his interest. He knew that there was more to learn.
One day, as was the norm, the hermit disappeared without warning and Thomas just carried on with his training until he returned; but like his father, he never did.
Several weeks later his remains were discovered in the woods, but no-one was able to agree on a cause of death. Another mystery that brought sorrow to his heart.
Now in his late 40s, Thomas felt he had no option but to leave and so left the confines of the hermit’s hut and venture out into the world – It was time for him to discover as much as he could, learn the secrets of the magical lands and maybe, just maybe, discover what had happened to his father, and the hermit.
