Dead Halls of Neglect and Ruin

by Douglas Mountainmantle

We charged across the bridge assaulting the keep. With the empressive might of our dwarven allies and the combined abilities of our group we were able to dispatch and turn the undead who dared block our path forward. Caving in the last and largest ghoul of the bunch we clear the bridge and take a short rest to gather our thoughts. The dwarves are concerned about entering the keep and turning into abominations... I too am troubled at this thought but I haven't lived in Dwarven societies for so long that I just dont follow the superstitions of the rest of my kind. They are insistent and although I feel concerned that they can be a liability if they all turn evil at once, their skills are valuable and can seriously aid us in the fight ahead. Without an argument we agree to have them come with us.

The Obsidian Keep is old, musty, and foreboding. We enter through the main hall and are greeted by massive stone pillars and thick walls to brace against invaders. We begin to investigate the rooms which have been sitting here neglected for decades at least. Dust cover the surfaces, wood decaying, and the halls and cells are occupied by the hollow forgotten dead, animated as zombies as a poor reminder to the corruption that has befallen these halls. In one of the rooms which may have been used as a forward armory has a lit fire in the hearth; shocking to see but may be a memento from the monsters that now occupy the keep. One of the rooms adjacent we found the captains quarters; it's very apparent that the keep wasn't prepared for what was fated to happen. The remains of the captain were found in the closet, they were in there for over 20 days before dying, possibly starvation. More dwarves were found dead in their beds, murdered by the look of it, but on a massive scale. Regardless I can't idly pitch the remains into the fire to prevent them from coming back to life without giving them their final rights first. Reaching for my holy tome and willing to take the time it takes I incant the words of Tumulus and give these souls some peace; sadly a few hundred years too late.

We made it to the great hall, massive statues line the center of the room either side of the naive. Statues resembling dwarven warriors hold the roof of this space aloft and wells with placid pools occupy the corners of this hall. Not long since entering the room I started to feel like I was drowning. It took Janos to pull me towards the center of the room to feel like I could breath again. Soon later, a waterlogged undead pulls itself from one of these pools and assaults us; blocking our ability to breathe. We managed to slay the creature, an undead dwarf fully clad in armor, and we were able to breath once more.
