As a boy, Dorian had a temperament that made him unsuited to the village of Sandy Snowdon. Ally to a druid girl, student of fire work pranks and (unsuccessful) magic, with habits for misdemeanours. The last straw came taking on his brother's bully. Throwing the Baron's son in pig shite is one thing, which folk might find amusing and look the other way. Knocking his teeth out when he charges back at you is another. It didn't matter they were the same tender age. The family Inn, the Dartmouth Arms, would be ruined if he didn't leave.
Thus, he was taken to a hiring fair in the nearest town out of the county. His father, Galen, hoped that Dorian would land an apprenticeship with some tradesman; the baron would be appeased, Dorian would be safe with a future, and above all the rascal would be someone else's problem.
But word crossed county lines, and Dorian had no luck attracting the interest of any employer. But at the corner of the fair, there when everyone else had packed there stalls and left, was a man concealed in a black cloak. Drake Dyer, 'the Wolf of Emwood', was a Witcher, a monster hunter for hire. He was recruiting for Loc Muin, the ancient witcher school and fortress hidden nearby the Frost Warren. Like Dorian, he'd had no luck at the fair. Galen signed his son up, half because, though Witchers can be detested amongst the great towns and cities, the country folk appreciate the invaluable service they do. The other half because every other potential warden for the boy had declined the offer.
Dorian handled the dietary changes and gruelling physical training, the near impossible sword drills, the long nights studying monster lore, and despite his previous failures at magic he learned the witcher signs cast with one hand. Then he survived the trials that mutated him, changed his eyes yellow and cat like, improved his agility and reflexes. He was lucky. Other recruits were not. Finally he surpassed his first encounters under Drakes tutorship. He was ready. He set off for the path, with his new made up title, Dorian of Ostrozolek, to follow his life as a witcher, forever changed.
