Onwards!
One journey, thoughts preoccupied with more important matters like revenge, Ferrel hands Gigi his personally drawn map of Avelorn - carefully created and beautifully laboured over, though very much meaningless to her - and asks which way they should be headed.
"Towards, surely," Gigi replied in full earnest, "or, er, forwards?"
The determined look on Ferrel's face switches to one of bafflement.
"Do you mean North? Or the way we are currently facing? What is 'towards'?"
"Well, towards the place we are headed."
"How does that help us navigate at all?! Of course we are headed towards our destination, but telling me to just keep heading 'towards' something is completely devoid of context!"
Of course, Gigi knew of relative space and relative time. Stood in a room, the walls are in different directions. She can only move a certain distance in a given time (mostly). Her eyes are in the front of her head. All of this is known. But tasked with describing the direction of a desired destination on a larger scale, as represented by a small-scale depiction of the surrounding area of both their current location and that desired destination, was a little trickier. This map, as all things Ferrel did, was precise and definite. He was the only human of their group, but his icy resolve rivaled Haakon's own.
"Well, if we want to go somewhere, we head 'towards' it. And we should not be going 'away' from it, because we are not attempting to avoid it. In conclusion, we should simply be going towards the place we want to go to. If we do not go there, we did not will it to happen with enough want."
Ferrel sighs, pinches the bridge of his nose, and points at the moon high in the sky.
"How would you get there then, if it really is as simple as just wanting to go there?!"
Gigi follows the line of his finger, marvelling at how even outside of his magic use, he is as much a constellation as the stars in the sky. She recalls one night of many spent performing until last call at an inn, where a scientist opined that mortals were made of the same stuff as exploding stars. She never believed it until now. Gigi chews at the inside of her cheek, mulling over his question for a second before answering with her full sincerity.
"Some places are harder to get to than other places, but if I really wanted to go to the moon then I would probably start by growing wings."
Ferrel throws his hands in the air before taking the map back.
"Utterly meaningless, thank you."
Gigi cocked her head to one side, puzzled at the comment - she was sure that Ferrel always managed to get to wherever he wanted to go, because he was the most determined person she had ever met.
