Session 21: Retreat, Recover, Re-enter Report

General Summary

Oolor 23rd: The party took the morning to do some shopping, getting items repaired/replaced (particularly some boots). As they were leaving the Parish of the Prolific Coin Jarvis hung back to look for a tail. This time he managed to spot someone suspicious, moved up behind the guy, and put a dagger to his back. The man attempted to jump away and spin on Jarvis, but the ever vigilant gnome was able to prick him for his trouble. A fight ensued, with partners of the man coming up after a few seconds and Jarvis getting surrounded while his fellows struggled to react to the quickly changing situation. Jarvis took a few bad hits, but managed to avoid most blows. Then a powerful magical projectile from a recovered Flinair turned the tide and the thugs were quickly sent fleeing or were dead on the ground. Jarvis talked to the watch about what happened when they arrived. The captured enemy, the one Jarvis originally attacked, said he was just walking along, following the adventurers hoping to learn from them, and the other two were just there to look after him in case he got into trouble. The guards took him away, telling the group to be at court in the morning to swear before the magistrate, that he'd be able to tell truth from lie. The party sits around for a bit, trying to heal up and decide what to do next. They end up going to a dive bar in the southeast area of the city called "The Hollow Leg". There Sven buys a round of whiskey for everyone in the bar while Flinair tries to get some info on the Roses and O'Dell Oakson, the jeweler they believe is connected to the thieves' guild. They get some rumors that O'Dell's jewelry sells so well, and why he is so wealthy, is that he bathes his crafts in the blood of children. Some others say the jeweler has a tunnel beneath his shop connecting to the Deep. Aside from that the only rumor they hear of any substance is that there is a rather large merchant convoy supposedly on its way north from Verdillion, one of the Western Kingdoms. They end up deciding to go back to the main safe house. They try the side door, finding it is made of solid oak with iron banding every 10-12 inches and a large, sophisticated lock. Harviticus attempts to open the door, but gets a needle in the hand for his trouble, and passes out for a solid minute as a result. After Jarvis fails with the lock they decide to go in the main doors. They enter the foyer and Sven attempts to open the double doors opposite the entrance, but ends up setting off a gas trap. Everyone manages to clear the room or resist the effects of the gas though. They were surprised because they went through that door before and Jarvis had disarmed that trap, but it seems to have been reset in the meantime. They go back down into the tunnels, but now the tunnel behind the secret door to the south is full of heaps of rock and rubble. So they decide to moved down the main hall again, this time laying boards they took from the building upstairs to avoid the small spike traps that had hurt their feet so much before. There are guild guards in the two rooms off this hallway though, who hear the group and spring an ambush, firing crossbows at the party and then waiting with swords and shields for them. Jarvis took a really bad hit and fled back to the entry room of the basement. Rheihanna got put down in agony for a full minute from a wicked dagger cut to her gut. Harviticus, the new guard member, took a few small punctures to the torso from the daggers, none too deep or painful, but they started to add up, and one deep stab under his arm. Eventually Sven and a returned-to-the-action Jarvis managed to bring down the last guard. Jarvis managed to find the rest of the traps in the hallway (there were eight total, counting the two that the group "found" with their heels). They looted the bodies of the guards and checked out the two exposed and empty rooms. The room at the far end of the hall seemed to lead nowhere, but Jarvis found a secret tunnel leading to the north. Again hurt quite a bit the group decides to pull back to heal, rest, and figure out their next move.
