This is the continuation of Session 403 - Drowning on Dry Land.

The heroes are investigating the death of Sir Patrin Memkele, the bailiff of Eryna Manor. Although Sir Patrin appeared to have aged prematurely, the actual cause of death was drowning (apparently in his bed). Furthermore, they have discovered that the peaceful Peonian Priest, Father Seiros, has been murdered as well.

The heroes travel to Eryna Manor and Ederyn Hamlet on the coast. Speaking with local fishermen, they have learned that the harvest has been poor of late. However, strange sea creatures linked to the Imprisoned Sea God Eder have repeatedly attacked the heroes.

Location - Ederyn Hamlet in the Kingdom of Kanday.

Part 1 – Where has the Villagers Gone?

After discovering a shrine to the sea god Eder, the heroes return to the small Ederyn Hamlet, discovering that half the villagers have disappeared. The remaining commoners said they followed the hermit Thalyorn up to a cottage on a nearby hill. They are holding a meeting. When the heroes enter the cottage, they find it empty, but a poorly disguised trapdoor leads to a series of dank underground passages. Edelina casts Light, and the investigators descend.

As they weave through the passages, they find stagnant pools of water, some occupied by pathic, vaguely humanoid sea creatures. These insipid, fat, slimy creatures rake the heroes with their claws and webbed talons, then grovel and cower when they miss and are easily slain.

Part 2 – Water Demon

Something worse lies in wait, but first, the dungeon delvers see the light and hear chanting from a distance. A peasant, torch in hand, is investigating the noise of the recent skirmish. Edelina extinguishes her Light, and the party hides. Spotting the slaughtered sea wretches, the peasant mutters, “Oh dear, not good,” panics and runs back further into the cavern. Before he gets far, Odin emerges from the shadows and decapitates him.

The delvers continue traveling down, noting small side passages too thin to squeeze through. Abaddon changes into a bat and investigates. One passage loops around to an underground river, and a passage that leads to a large cavern from which light and chanting emerge. But before he can report, a huge monstrosity moves towards the heroes. This tentacled creature conjures a cloud of noxious gas, choking the heroes and attacking with poisoned claws. Odin and Remy hold their breath as best they can battle it while Abaddon, after returning to humanoid form, pokes at it from outside the Stinking Cloud with his spear. The heroes are nauseated but are successful in destroying the demonic sea horror.

Part 3 – The Ceremony

The heroes stealthily approach the lit cavern. Inside, they see a score of villagers in a circle. In the center is a pool where the Hermit Thalyorn is dramatically leading the chanting. These are Eder cultists, worshipers of the trapped sea god. Standing nearby, two large pieces of driftwood are covered in runes and bloody symbols. On the driftwood are four tiny carved wooden dolls, vaguely resembling the heroes; one resembling Remy is broken (several hours ago, Remy barely survived a curse as his lungs began to fill with seawater).

The heroes are unwilling to let this blasphemy continue and attack. Remy, cloaked in Invisibility blasts the peasants with metal shards and sparks. Odin leaps in, hacking with his greatsword, and Abaddon slashes at the heretics and their leader with his spear. Most of the peasants fall quickly to the heroes, but several are robust fishermen who put up a fruitless fight. The Hermit Thalyorn has some magical ability, basting the heroes with bone-chillingly cold seawater, but he is soon slain, and half a dozen remaining peasants quickly surrender.

Part 4 – The Driftwood Effigy’s

The peasants are pathetic and huddled in a corner while the victorious heroes investigate the chamber. Edelina deals with the tiny voodoo dolls of the PCs. Abaddon, examining the symbols on the driftwood, detects powerful magic. These evil effigies are designed to call any monstrous sea creatures to the nearby bay. This must be the reason the local fishing has been poor and the heroes harassed by all manner of foul sea monsters. Having no patience with such disgusting magic, Abaddon incinerates the logs. Immediately, the heroes feel a wave of released magical energy.

Part 5 – The Storm

As the triumphant heroes leave the caverns with their cultist prisoners, they find the weather has abruptly changed. What was a cloudless, warm day two hours ago has turned into a fierce storm. Black clouds, thunder, lightning, and intense wind and rain cover the sky. Worse, dozens of vaguely humanoid forms made of air and rain attack the heroes. This collection of weak elementals uses their combined power to pummel those who have defied the will of Eder. Although they nearly kill Edelina, Odin and his friends make work of them. Several hours later, the storm abruptly disappears as quickly as it appeared, although the nearby villages and crops have taken a pounding.

To be continued.
