Session 15 - The Voyage Home - The Froth within the Sea Report

General Summary

Sunday 2 Ready'reat (continued)

Krichelle's brothers join the group and discuss the unexpected loss of their father. The party quickly agrees to travel to Tyrant's Rocks to explore the remains of Fortune's Folly with the understanding that Krichelle only wants the sextant and painting from her father's quarters. The rest of anything found will be the party's payment.   Leaving the Drunken Barrel behind, the party starts preparations for returning to Saltmarsh. Finding a small shop, a head pops up from behind a desk as the party enters, "Welcome to Bobs and Baubles your single stop for oddities and knicknacks! I'm Bob and what can I help you find today?"   Leeroy explains that they are searching for those special items that have been weaved with arcane energies. Bob nods, then leads them through a maze of shelves to a corner where a small array of goods are displayed. Walking up to a robe covered with patches, he states "This is an interesting item. I've not seen it in action, but if you look closely each of these patches resemble an object. I've been told that when you rip one off it becomes the thing it resembles. It's quite useful for those traveling through the wilderness, assuming you don't mind the style. I can let you have it for six hundred gold pieces."   Leeroy nonchalantly responds, "That's not really my style. What else do you have?"   The shop keep nods, but takes note of Karia's keen gaze. "Next are these fine calf-lined boots. From what I've learned, you'll be able to spring triple your normal jumping distance plus no matter how much you carry, you'll keep striding as normal. I've had these boots for a spell, so I'm willing to part with them for eight hundred gold."   "Those are quite interesting," responds Leeroy, "but what's this spear here? Anything special about it?"   "You've a good eye sir. Rumors state that that javelin brings the finger of Procan down upon a target," relates Bob. "It'd be a fine addition to your exemplary armament and all for the low price of nine hundred gold pieces."   Karia inquires about a small globe resting against the boots, "Is that a ball? Why is it over here?"   "Ah yes! Supposedly, upon command, this ball will turn as bright as daylight and follow you around," responds Bob. "I also have a few potions. Would you like to see them? Have you found anything you like?"   "The boots seem rather nice," Leeroy muses. "A bit steep at eight though."   Mina interjects, "I'm interested in the javelin. What if we buy them both, can you give us a discount?" After a bit of negotiating, Bob accepts each item for fifty less gold than the stated price. Karia, Mina, and Leeroy don their new items and head out toward the Friending Boatship.   Along the way, the ship's chef locates the party providing them with a list of goods and the party quickly assents to the expenditure. The chef states that the goods will be on before night fall so they can sail with the morning tide.   In the morning, Krichelle and her brothers board the ship about an hour before weighing anchors. Co-captain Geff quickly sets course toward the Tyrant's Rocks while the party performs their normal tasks aboard ship. Near mid-afternoon Karia cries out from the crow's nest indicating Tyrant's Rocks ahead. Everyone gathers on the starboard rail and looks over the scene. Waves surge forward through bleached white coral and sharp rock jutting outward from the sea clearly indicating how the island received it's name. Beyond this treacherous terrain, a thin strip of sand encircles a calm blue hole. A ship's bow rammed onto the beach points toward the Friending Boatship and heavily tilts to the port. Captain Geff gruffly states, "Well there's no way we're reaching the island aboard this ship. She'll be shredded to pieces on those teeth."   "Well," Nar quips, "if Istus wills it."   Mina whips her around looking flabbergasted at Nar, "I'm sorry what did you just say?"   Looking flustered Nar sheepishly responds, "Isn't that"   Geff interrupts, "It looks like there is a narrow passage. We could try using a jolly boat to get your company ashore."   Stepping forward, Krichelle asks, "You are taking us with you, yes?"   Kyra questions, "Can you fight?"   Krichelle responds carefully, "I'm sure I can hold my own."   As a deckhand tosses the rope ladder over the rails, Mina tells Krichelle, "Don't leave my side as you never know what might happen on the reef." She then descends to the jolly boat with everyone else following, including Kret, Krobert, and Kphillip.   As the party rows toward the island, only the sound of waves crashing against the coral can be heard. The air smells of brine and the ship disappears from sight as waves swell around the jollyboat.   Landing upon the isle, the party steps out onto the strand crunching the sand beneath their boots. Small crabs scurry away as the party strides toward the ship. As they walk around the side of the ship, they realize that the ship has been shorn in half. The stern has been ripped away without any trace of where it might be. Stepping into the lagoon within the atoll, the party can see the stern of the ship at the bottom of the ocean, but the party decides to go through the bow section first to ensure that nothing gets missed. With a quick command, Kyra's boots lift her above the deck of the ship where she's quickly joined with Leeroy springing upward in his new boots. Leeroy quickly lowers a rope between the broken and splintered deck so that the rest of the party can join them.   The empty and lifeless deck shows only a single door leading into the hull beneath the forecastle. The party quickly explores the three rooms on the main deck noticing that cargo and furniture has shifted toward the port in what was obviously a hard crash into the shore. Within the forward most room, the party discovers several potions containing a swirly green mixture with a bubble resembling a jelly fish. Kyra deduces that the potion will allow the drinker to breath water for about an hour. The party then descends through a trap door in the main passageway.   Reaching the lower deck, the party again scours through the adjoining rooms that were used as living compartments for the sailors. Each of these rooms have tossed furniture and a chest. During the search Leeroy impatiently destroys a lock causing a dart trap to misfire into him. Within the chests, the party discovers assorted jewels and a scroll. The party then hops down past the broken floorboards and explores the bilge finding one more potion within the detritus.   Leaving the hull of Fortune's Folly, Mina asks Krichelle, "Do you know where your father would've kept the sextant and painting?".   "I think he kept it in his quarters," Krichelle responds, "which should be near the stern of the ship."   "Well, I guess there's no avoiding it," exclaims Leeroy as he shifts his helm of underwater action. He then points to the sunken stern of the ship, "We're going to have to swim down there."   Karia dons the hood of Kyra's manta ray cloak while Kyra asks, "Yes, but we don't have enough potions for everyone, do we?"   Krichelle volunteers to guard the jollyboat along with her brothers. Mina gives a skeptical look, but agrees.   The rest of the party quaffs a potion and feels the arcane energies course through their bodies before stepping out into the water and swimming downward. Several minutes pass as the party dives down a hundred feet before approaching the broken stern. Leeroy leads the way by swimming into the open hold and sees that the lower deck has been destroyed leaving only a few shards of broken boards along the hull.   The party swims deeper into the stern and Mina gurgles out a belated warning as several animals ambush the party. A few crabs, an eel, and a giant octopus strike quickly against the party. Mina throws her javelin toward the octopus and smiles broadly as it morphs into a bolt of lightning striking squarely in the body before returning to spear form. Leeroy steps forward to swing his halberd, but a crab grabs his foot lifting him upside down off the seafloor. As Mina and Leeroy occupy the giant octopus, the rest of the party quickly dispatches the other aggressors. The battle abruptly ends as Mina retrieves her javelin ripping it across the body hemorrhaging the remaining life from it. She then carefully dissects the beak and ink pouch before handing it to Nar.   Nar thanks Mina in 'whale' by speaking very slowly in a deep sonorous tones. Kyra rolls her eyes and whips Nar with her tail in exasperation.   Noticing the remains of stairs above the party, they swim upward to find themselves on the main deck. The party enters the starboard cabin revealing that it's clearly the captain's cabin with a desk against the stern bulkhead and a relatively luxurious bunk on the forward bulkhead. The party searches through the desk and finds an intact journal, ship's log, a painting of a woman with a small boy in front of a ship, as well as a scroll and a non-descript cap. Searching the rest of the room Karia discovers a secret cache of equipment behind a secret door.   The party then explores the port-side cabin which likely housed the first mate and find a total of three potions, one being a dark red color and the other two containing the swirling bluish-green mixture already identified as Water Breathing. The party retraces back down the stairs to a torn section of the aft bulkhead. Examining the hole, the party sees claw marks that scratched away the boards and rock leading into the atoll. They start swimming down this five foot circular passageway as it winds around in a circle before opening up into a vast chamber. Within this chamber are several manta rays circling at different heights.   Suddenly one of the smaller manta rays breaks toward the party and the party instantly understands the term "Demon ray" as this creature glides through water in an attack posture. Nar gurgles out "Surrender" which attracts the other ixitxachitls. The water becomes embroiled with the chaos of combat as Leeroy plows through the smaller ixitxachitls and focuses on the larger alpha vampiric ixitxachitl. Kyra moves into the chamber and summons the arcane energies of witch bolt against the ixitxachitl that's been calling upon the abyss for assistance. Sensing that the cleric demon ray is seeking a retreat, Karia uses the full power of her cloak to bridge the distance and strikes the ixitxachitl squarely finishing it off.   The turgid waters slowly calm as the party sinks to the sea floor searching the area. Thousands of coins litter the seabed as well as some loose gems and a few other precious items. As the party finishes their scan, they find an inscribed sketch on the wall above a ritual pile of skulls. The inscription depicts a two headed monstrosity. Recognizing it from books that Wellgar lent her, Mina gasps, "It's Demogorgon, a powerful demon lord of the Abyss!"
