Shadow Session 3

General Summary

14th of Early Hollow, 1758

Night falls on your second night in Divinterre. You stare up at the ceiling, pondering the events of the day and how you came here. First the mists to make your escape and now here. A Venezian feigning to be a necromancer in the catacombs, he even led you to where he found a horrible tome. A little snooping around Notre Majeste led to the party discovering a Stellaic puzzle that led to a secretive lair they put in the cathedral.

From there, you rest the night away at the Cidrefils Tavern. Staring at the ceiling above, you close your eyes. Though, the desired tranquil sleep never comes. All that arrives instead is a familiar place. Out the windows are the black forests again. You’re quick to duck in a corner with your weapon of choice. A lit candle sits by your side as the only source of light before total darkness envelopes everything.

“Morning will come,” you tell yourself, “It has to. It always does.”

An hour wades by. All is quiet. A snap pulls your attention to the window. It doesn’t help as abnormal footsteps get closer. Not again. Please, not again.

A hand covered in scratch marks and old festering wounds clamps onto the windowsill. The monster’s shadow begins to illuminate as morning’s light comes, sending it to run off.

A new day has arrived. You lay back in relief, perhaps expecting a wall but instead find a comfortable pillow. It’s only a dream.

The party heads for the Bloodwater Theater to investigate this haunted place. After some snooping around, the party finds the ghost of Mirella Cavallo. A Venezian woman murdered by the cruel Cardinal Couteau after she had put on a play satirizing his authority. From there, managed to coax her into helping them understand further of Divinterre’s problems.

According to her, the Misty Rider is actually named Corriero. This Venezian hero was a constant thorn in Couteau’s plans. He was killed at the Riverguard Bridge and Mirella suspects Couteau to have a trophy of his greatest nemesis. She hopes by returning the skull, it will bring peace to Divinterre somehow.

From there, the party ventured to Notre Majeste and into the Cardinal’s personal room up top. There, they found the skull hidden in an animated armor’s helmet. From there, Rahas’ vulture familiar soared with a tressym familiar with the skull back to the theater for Mirella, who confirmed it to be Corriero’s skull.

The guard was quick to run towards the Riverguard Bridge while the party rested. It’s discovered that the Cardinal has ordered no one to cross the bridge and head into the mists. The party urged them that the vulture had the skull, to which the sergeant reluctantly agreed to at least escort the party across. Carcass, wild-shaped into a horse, secretly had the skull with him as he ventured up to Maleou Village and Kasner running off after the druid. The guard believed them goners after they ran off, to which the sergeant was quick to return to the bridge.

The party awaits in the village for the Misty Rider to appear. During that time, Vassaryn and Rahas went back for the bridge to explain things to the sergeant but they were instead met with more fusiliers. The sergeant made it clear that if they hoped to return to Divinterre, they were to find the skull and return to the Cardinal’s possession for “proper handling.”

The two headed back up to Maleou.

When nightfall came, the familiar visions of that wicked forest came true. There was no need for the change, for the wretched beast now lurks in the village.
