The Rising Koi Saga: Chapter 18 Report

General Summary

With disturbing intel from their prisoner and Silverhold fast approaching, the Rising Koi were forced to make a quick decision on how to proceed. After going over what they knew, and how much they trusted the Silverguard’s security– they decided to haul Utano in for her sentencing. A sleepy Warden Seiji listened to their case before making his sentencing: Utano would serve 150 years, or manage a steep bail of 1800 Kobans. He told the woman she would die here, while her daughter would walk free when she came of age… before Arata took her away to put her into Solitary as they considered their next steps. And with that, the Warden requested they meet back with him for breakfast…as he needed to sleep on the information they had delivered.   After a much-needed rest, the Rising Koi returned to meet with the Warden to conduct the remainder of their business. They went over the details of the night previous, he paid them their fee… and then offered them his patronage in exchange for keeping an eye out on the events happening in Silverport– on both sides– to ensure his rival, Lieutenant Musa, was operating honorably in his duties. The party agreed. Satisfied, the Warden gave them a letter from Guardian Priests that informed them of the suicide of Rinkei of the Black Tortoise and what clues they were able to discover since their last meeting. It read:    Heroes,     I hope this letter finds you in good health, for I bring news. Both that of the task set before us to unravel the mysteries of your visions and the tragedy that has befallen us. Forgive me, as I start with the grim tidings: the death of our most senior Priest of the Four Guardians, Rinkei of the Black Tortoise. We tried to soothe his melancholy at the news of what happened at the Temple and to our dear acolytes… but to no avail. He leapt from the confines of safety granted by our Blessed Tree of Knowledge to his death in the chilled leywaters below. Try as we might– days being our best guess, in these sunless depths– we could not save him, but were able to at last recover his corpse. We ask that you return his body to Kenro, so that he may be buried on the Temple Grounds.     But I know what you truly wish to know from us, that of which we have discovered since we last spoke. I will ask that you keep your expectations reasonable, as we are at half of our original number– with Rinkei dead and Kenro on his path for retribution. But we have made some progress, at least on discovering more about the mysterious spiritual conferences in the north. I was able to trace the source of this strange utilization through the Spiritual Realms to the island of Shutoshu– with the strongest point somewhere on the Eastern Coast. While I’ve not been able to listen in on any of the conversations, due to my careful approach, I have discovered most activity happens at key points of the day. Sunrise. Noon. And Sunset. I don’t think they’re aware of our research as of yet, as activity seems regular with no sign of decline. I will continue to monitor their activity and report should we find another breakthrough in our investigation.

I pray this was useful,

On their return, the Rising Koi debated their next move. The Akamori cousins brought up returning to their home to consult with their grandparents… though the other members of the party seemed less keen on this idea, given the fact they were on the second day of their week passes provided by the Silverguard… something they would need to prove was worthy of granting them, should they need more in the coming days. Or, in Xyian’s case, the fear of getting another bath. Such plans were delayed on their arrival back to Silverport, as Seiji Yuta had a request from the Silvergaurd Barracks on their return.   They were given the choice of two new murder investigations: Kenro, who had wounds similar to that of the Magistrate, and Okaji– the suspected assassin of the Magistrate. Okaji had his throat slit, the wound stained black… furthermore, he had scruff on his face. Something none of the men working the night of the Magistrate’s murder sported. Perhaps it was the hope they could still salvage the bonus the Captain offered, perhaps it was the fact they already had some leads on the case… the Rising Koi decided to leave Kenro’s case to the Silverguard and they took the job to look deeper in the suspicious circumstances of the death of their suspected assassin.
