What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

The word "cosmology" refers to "the science of the origin and development of the universe.". However, the section "cosmology" is a subsection of the religion template and its description says "What is the understanding of the world and its creation according to this religion?"

How does this feature request address the current situation?

The word "Cosmogony" is larger than cosmology and can be applied both to science and religion : "Cosmogony is any model concerning the origin of the cosmos or the universe."

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! Cosmogony would indeed be a more precise word (Dimitris created the templates and is Greek, so he definitely knows!), but Cosmology was chosen instead because it's more widely-known and it's "close enough". We're declining because of a clear lack of community support, but also because we avoid editing headers that already exist because we don't want to change other people's content.

Keep it as "Cosmology" but have it turn into "Cosmogony" on hover. Then no one will be happy.

Even if "cosmogony" is a "better" word, "cosmology" is more widely used and understood. Before this suggestion, I had not encountered the word "cosmogony". And I hang out with a fair number of wordy/nerdy folks. I think "cosmogony" is just too obscure to be widely usable.

I appreciate care for accurate language and when a definition is mere a click away on Wikipedia it only takes a few moments to research an unfamiliar word and then learn something along the way as I did just now. WA can be educational as well as entertaining :-)   In this specific case, though, this is a very fine distinction and I'm not convinced that changing the heading is actually correct. By using the word Cosmogony you would actually exclude the "development" aspect which is implied within the phrase "understanding of the world" and restrict the kind of things people may have already used this template element for.   Since Cosmology does have concerns about the origin AND the development of the universe, Cosmogony, only having concerns about origins is a subset of Cosmology rather than the other way around... At last that's my interpretation!

I think this would just be confusing - people actually know what cosmology means.

I am fond of semantics distinctions, but even for me, this going too far into the obscure
