Ethnicity Parent Species Parent-Species

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

In the current article template for Ethnicity there is no drop down option for parent species. In worlds with multiple intelligent species this field would add additional clarity without having to use additional articles for blanket ethnicities to fill that gap. For example if there are humans, elves, and dwarves it would be able to say that Gondorian is an ethnicity of humans rather than the others.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would give an option to set species, therefore providing additional clarity, instead of having to use other work arounds. For the above example insted of having multiple articles labeled Human (one species and one ethnicity) you would only need the species article.

The Team's Response

Hello beans!   This suggestion did not reach any threshold. First of all establishing a relationship between a species and an ethnicity is already possible via the Species template (Generic > RELATED ETHNICITIES) . As a rule so far all relationships between article types are editable on the

I'm not all that clear how this improves the article explosion problem described in the 2nd part of this issue statement as both species and ethnicity are still needed as articles for the dropdown to work. I'd agree that no "Parent Species" selection is a bit of a nuisance though.

Having had this conversation multiple times with Dimitri's over the years, I'm not shooting this down flat out.   To improve your request, I would suggest making it a multiple article selectable link, like Related Ethnicities in the Species template. This would be a great way to state "These various species can fall under the ethnic and cultural confines of this group, while for whatever reason these ones don't."   Even then, I don't feel it has a strong use or usercase to be implemented, but I get the appeal.

I think related ethnicities in the species tab covers this use case much better.   And although the Revolutionary T-Rex is probably not going to read this: But real live New Yorkers are an exceptionally bad counter-example as all New Yorkers are of the same species a.k.a Humans.

I am sorry but ethnicities cannot have a parent species. It's like saying parent cars on spaceships. Ethnicities are groups of people that can and do encompass multiple species/races/phenotypes. i.e. New Yorkers are not only white, black, elves or humans.

There is a space for "RELATED ETHNICITIES" on the species template. This makes the connection visible in the sidebar of both the species and ethnicity articles. (See https://worldanvil.com/w/eccbooks/a/halfling and https://worldanvil.com/w/eccbooks/a/winkie) Does this not cover what you're looking for?

I never understood (but maybe i missed an important point) why these two article templates could not be linked. As said above, you need a species for 'Elves' and ethnicities for 'Wood elves', 'dark elves'... and of course, it would be great if when you are reading the Species articles on elves, you could see in the right lateral box the list of related ethnicites. Great suggestion !
