Article Sidebar -user-Interface
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
As you know, article templates have set sections for information. For example, the character template has sections such as “Physical Description” and “Known Languages”. Each of these sections are either part of the main article, or on the sidebar, depending on the section.
The problem is, each section is locked into the article or sidebar. So “Known Languages” will always be placed on the sidebar, no matter what. This can be problematic if you wanted to go into further detail on the person’s languages, like how they learned it, as such information would become cumbersome in the small sidebar.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
My proposed solution to this is to add a toggle to chose whether these sections go on the main text or on the sidebar. These toggles will default to how they currently are, so any articles already made will not be affected, but people will be able to put any of the sections on either part of the article.
What are other uses for this feature request?
Users will be able to be more flexible with how much or how little information they put for each category without it looking awkward. For example, small amounts of information can be put into the side bar, so you don’t just have, say a “Physical Description” section that just says “Strong and muscular” sitting in the middle of the article.
Follow up
Someone has mentioned custom templates. I appreciate the comment, but would like to point out two problems: First, custom templates are Grandmaster only. And second, that would require making an entire template for something that may be an individual case. I'd much rather just be able to pick and choose what to put where right there in the article, rather than having to open a new tab, make a template, and use it just once for this particular article.
Aye, we got a dev response! Thanks Dimitri for looking over this, but I would like to point out that I made a follow-up explaining why custom templates aren’t quite what I’m looking for. You see, for custom templates, you must make the full template beforehand to use on the article. So if you decide that you want a particular part to be on the sidebar while making it, you’d have to create a new template. (From my understanding, I don’t have access to custom templates.)
The issue is, you can’t decide if something should go in the sidebar while editing the article itself. You’d have to go and make a new custom template if you decide that you want a single thing in the sidebar that is normally in the main section. What I’m proposing is a toggle switch by all of an article’s sections where you can choose if that section goes in the main area or sidebar. (For example, if you wanted to put Mental Trauma in the sidebar, as all you put down was “Has PTSD”. Or if you wanted to put down Known Languages in the main area, as you go over how and where the character learned each language.)
I say this with respect, and understand if this is too minor of a feature to spend time on. If you would like me to explain more, say so and I will. Happy worldbuilding, everyone.
The Team's Response
Custom Templates can allow you to modify how and where sections appear :)
