What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
In the Chronicle, locations can be defined as a pin, but not any of the other marker types from Maps, e.g. polygons. This allows us to create a location that may have many events, but not events that cover multiple locations like, for example, a war.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
By allowing locations to be polygons, events for larger areas, such as regions or countries, can be shown without the need to change the data model to allow for events to have multiple location.
For example, the Great Depression didn't just affect New York City, but the wider area of the United States (and beyond).
What are other uses for this feature request?
Other uses include selecting the polygon and seeing events for pin locations within the polygon (Chronicles uses Leaflet which allows this sort of thing).

I'm a Grand Master and do not see the feature. I did see that a similar request was declined due to the relationship between Location and Event, that is, Locations can have many Events with Events belonging to zero or one Location.
My request is to allow Location to contain different types of Markers as currently exists in the main Map functionality, in particular the polygon. The underlying entity relationship between Location and Event shouldn't need to change.
While I did mention another use case to nest Locations/Events within the polygon, it's not necessary functionality but does demonstrate future utility without having to change the entity relationship of Location and Event.
I'm a software engineer with a decent amount of experience using LeafletJS and am very willing to help the devs as much as I can :)
