What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
At current, the article system requires duplicate articles for things like Kingdoms. The above three things are all clearly best-served by the 'organization' template, but PCs, NPCs, Items, etc, cannot have their 'current location' set to these organizations, and must instead choose a 'location' templated article.
If only the 'location: settlement' template is used, the Kingdom article will miss out on a large array of template boxes (currency, government system, judicial system etc) that are only offered in the 'organization' template.
Users wind up with duplicate articles for Kingdoms:
one where one is the 'organization' template
one with 'location: settlement' template used by any article that can be set in a physical location
This is further hampered by the fact that the 'parent article' dropdown menu in the Navigation tab does not provide a distinction of mulitple named articles. So, 'Lyria' the 'organization' and 'Lyria' the 'location:settlement' both simply show up as 'Lyria' requiring either a guess or a name change. (this is in opposition to the in-article @ system where the type of template is shown in parentheticals)
How does this feature request address the current situation?
These problems could be circumvented if:
organizations were allowed to serve as Locations for PCs, NPCs, Items, and other articles that can have physical geographical locations
OR
changing the type of 'location: settlement' template added the many extra fields for 'organization' (i.e. picking 'national territory' from the settlement type dropdown)
What are other uses for this feature request?
- Mystical or magic items rumored to be in locations can have their articles as children under organizations, allowing viewers/readers/players to read about the place when they read about the item.
The Team's Response
Thanks for your suggestion! Organizations are never places, they are always groups of people—while an organization can have control over a place (e.g. a university has control over the university buildings), the place itself is not the organization. Therefore, this is declined. I recommend using custom key-value pairs in your sidebar instead: --KEY::VALUE--, for example: --Location::Your organization here---.
