Slide events around with mouse on timeline

User Interface (UI) / User Experience (UX) · Timelines · Created by Vivian Sayan
accepted

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

The ability to move events around on the timeline. As it stands now you gotta click in, change the date and go back to the timeline and reload to see it. If you have a lot of events you wish to have an overview of their relation in time it gets tedious if you want to change them around and see how it lines up. On top of this having the timeline be to scale would assist here rather than unscaled as it is now

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By being able to slide them around more seamlessly where it shows the date where you drop it off, it is easier to move events around relative to each other and thus getting an easier control over the timeline.

What are other uses for this feature request?

It could easily be adapted to do more work, expanding it could move it to several timelines, you could have visuals with all timelines nad move on one and see it on all of them at the same time and so on.

I like the idea, but this would be difficult in timelines with wildly varying gaps between events. Like, the creation of most worlds is a LONG time away from most other events. If the timeline is now made to scale, you’d also need a feature to squish things closer if they’re too far apart. Also, yeah, you’d need an undo button.   This is nice in theory, but it may prove problematic in practice.

Completely agree with Michael Chandra's concerns. But good idea nonetheless.

I'd probably use the timelines more if this was an option!

Sometimes even changing the date doesn't actually even get things in the proper order. Click-and-drag would be a lot nicer and easier - maybe the dates can just be 'flavor' and not impact placement, or it could be a toggle? either click-and-drag or place-by-date?

This would be very useful during early stages of story/campaign development. You could shift and reorder events around while in the early phases of development, then use the normal method to adjust dates if needed.

Just make sure it's optional / toggleable. I hate it when I accidentally move map markers and can't properly undo that, would hate to accidentally mess up my timeline.

As someone who's messy with time IRL, let alone fantasy worlds, this would be a huge help.
