Lightbox solution for Images

images lightbox
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
When browsing an article with embedded images, I find it frustrating that I get taken to a separate page click on the thumbnail version to see the full sized (or bigger version) of the image. There also doesn't seem to be any way back to the article from the new page which also interrupt the flow of reading the article.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
My request is to include a lightbox feature with when engaging with pictures as part of an article. This is fairly standard when clicking on images in a wiki setting, as it allows the users to stay on the article they're reading while also being able to view an image in more detail than the thumbnail allows for.   As there is image carousel functionality on the platform, that could even be leveraged to allow for more seamless navigation of images in the "pop-up" lightbox. This would let readers stay on the article while still browsing all the images present,
What are other uses for this feature request?
The Lightbox functionality could in theory be leverage when other pop-up needs come up, but admittedly the feature is primarily focused on making the image viewing experience for article smoother.

The Team's Response

This is a wonderful idea! Thank you for your suggestion. This will be implemented in the new interface.

Yes, I do know that devs are really excited for the function of liking an image, but I do think it was the wrong direction to take them. They shouldn't be articles, but tools to enhance articles. Images being their own thing takes away from the importance of articles. If I wanted to browse images I'd do it on facebook, instagram, or countless art sharing sites, not WA. Of course I do understand the niche of artists using WA as their portfolio, but still, having a toggle between opening lightbox or the image's article would satisfy both the artists and the worldbuilders and if it's one or the other then the worldbuilders should remain the focus.   Again, it's a recent change so I don't want any bad blood with the devs, but having a lightbox (with maybe a "like" in the bottom corner) would be way more on theme.

Yes please, I don't want readers to navigate out of my articles to an image page in order to read descriptions, details, or access the new like button for images!

This isn't a bad idea - but it might take a lot of programming... I dunno. I'm generally in favour, if it is doable.
