Add Characters to Organizations and Settlements in article

New Feature Addition · Articles & templates · Created by Odenia

characters towns settlements organizations

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Inability to assign characters to a location or organization from the settlement or organization article

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would make it so characters can be added to a settlement or organization quicker (Like how we can assign the leader of an organization while editing an article) than going into each character tab one by one.

Follow up

Thank u for the suggestion but The reason this would be different than using @ hyperlinks is because instead of the information just being accessible from the town or organization article it would automatically update all your characters locations in their profile. This would automatically create a list of characters that are associated with that town or organization in the article. Just like how a character will appear on the town article if you update their location from their profile.   (And not related to my last point.)The point of this suggestion is to be able to do location and organization assignment from those respective articles. I am well aware you can assign these things in a characters article.

The Team's Response

Hi! Thanks for your suggestion. Adding characters to locations is already possible from the location article. This won't be added at this point to avoid duplication of fields. Remembed that you can add custom data in the sidebar using --KEY::VALUE--. For example, --Leader of::Organization 1[br]Organization 2-- will generate this:
Leader of
Organization 1
Organization 2
Add it to the sidebar of your article to replicate the look of pre-defined fields.

So long as it was the same relationship (i.e. one filled in the other), and didn't create two different pathways I'd be in favour. Otherwise, it just seems like needless dev work and interface space.

I think it is not difficult to move between articles to fill in all the desired fields... so long as you know where to go. This would be a helpful feature to help World Anvil avoid alienating newer users.

Would this allow for a character to be in multiple organizations/towns?

I really like both suggestions!! This would be so nice to have, especially for members of an organization.

I'm giving this an upvote with a caveat. This can currently be done by setting the characters 'current location' setting in the 'current status' section of the character page, in the prompts below the vignette. Setting this will add the character to the side bar on the page if it is being used. The Tag system upgrade will also address this as you could then simply tag characters with a location tag and then do a two part tag search of 'Character' && 'Location'

Not sure it's worth the dev time to implement, since it can very easily be done by going into the character themselves and adding the link that way.

You technically can do it through the @ or link option. Just create a member section on the general box for your settlement/geography article.

no, have everything assigned from character side instead (looking at you: TITLES)
