export -pdf compatibility
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
The current export, as an archive with folders with HTML/JSON, is complex to navigate. Notably, AI can struggle to navigate in such an archive, if they can at all.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
An export of all the articles as a single PDF document would greatly simplify data management. It is also a common format for writers and scenarists that would improve compatibility with others applications or simple storing of a world.
What are other uses for this feature request?
For the specific AI use case, on ChatGPT, for example, it would allow providing a whole world as a single simple to use document.
Follow up
Additionaly, an exported PDF would allow a very efficient global research.
To clarify about the questions raised until now :
"Why not have both?" : The suggestion of adding PDF export does not imply suppressing the current export options, in any way. These methods are complementary.
"How would you even export it?" : I suggest using the simplest method, which would probably close to web browsers native functionalities of PDF export. Anyone can test it on a single article with ctrl + P and selection of the PDF printing option. Of course, this format does not respect CSS, portraits would be placed at the end of the article, etc. However, the aesthetic could be an additional functionality to request later, if deemed necessary. This is a simple suggestion, the devs of World Anvil could probably answer the question of technical feasibility much better than me.
CSS specific case : Please note that the current HTML export does not export CSS (nor the pictures, or the chronologies). You may consider asking the HTML export improvement if you consider the subject important.
"subscriber groups, members, privacy settings" : This is not the matter here, and these cannot be rendered in the current html export either.
The Team's Response
Hi! Thanks for this suggestion. However, we need to decline it, as we are an online publishing platform, not a physical printing software. There is a lot of complexity beyond our scope that comes with generating properly formatted PDFs based on World Anvil worlds, which frequently use very advanced formatting.
I also wanted to take a moment to answer to some of the specific concerns in this suggestion:
- If you want an export to integrate it with ChatGPT, AIs of this type shouldn't have major issues with reading basic HTML files, which can already be exported (and as far as I know, ChatGPT includes options to read webpages for their subscription tiers, which might be useful for this too).
- If the goal is to access your content offline, this is possible too. Go to your world settings (from the gear button at the bottom) and reveal advanced options on the right to find the exporter. Your Guild level will affect the type of export you get, but you will get a full export of all articles regardless of that.
- Finally, if the goal is to have print-friendly versions of articles, that's already possible too. Edit an article, open advanced tools on the right, and use the "Print/Export" button under "Special Actions". As long as you don't use advanced CSS customization, this will generate a print-friendly HTML page.
