Import / Export Timeline to/from Spreadsheet Format (CSV, whatever works)

export import timeline spreadsheet report csv

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Timeline looks pretty, but for large scale reviews/changes, I need to view it in a more compact and sortable tabular format. Currently, I'm finding I need to maintain a spreadsheet version of my timeline to make it easier to keep my online version up-to-date.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Export would allow me to download a csv file, open it in Excel (etc) and review/sort by columns. Import would allow me to upload an updated version back into my world anvil Timeline. I understand the Import might not be a priority to implement, but the Export would atleast allow me to have a spreadsheet copy to review the existing dataset more easily -- even if I then have to manually update the online Timeline.

What are other uses for this feature request?

You could add Import/Export it to other WorldAnvil items like Articles. I would love to have a spreadsheet version of my characters, locations, etc for the same reason.   You could expand the Export option to support other formats - pdf, real text, etc

The Team's Response

Hey there!   The timelines system needs to become easier to use. Adding an import from X or Y will require people to have to create specifically designed structures of CSV or whatever else this might be in order to work with it - this idea is a crutch for a system that needs love and upgrades :)   Project Horae is already in UI/UX development - come by the stream today to see what we are up to

Being able to export timelines - as a spreadsheet or otherwise - sounds like it would help with manageability if you're trying to keep things straight whilst working off the internet and you might not have access to World Anvil.

It's currently very hard to manage timelines and chronicles, especially with chronicles not having proper text editor. Each change of name or term follows by a disaster of having to read and check everything, clicking (and mis-clicking) a TON of buttons etc. Managing a csv, json or xml file would be much easier.

I like the idea of potential external integrations because a csv is a common format.

Managing timelines is already an arduous process on a conceptual level. The more detailed it becomes, the more onerous it is to maintain. I love the idea of using a csv to facilitate this, because it would also mean that updating it from an external source becomes a trivial matter.
