Tracking the Reader's progress on a Published Manuscript

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

As an Author, I believe that you should always look to better your work. So when I see that X amount of people have 'opened the cover' of my manuscript' and Y amount have opened Chapter 1, but I have Z comments, I find find that odd.    I believe that, if possible, adding a tracker to how far a reader gets in a chapter or manuscript would help me understand where my growth needs to be done, even if I dont get comments.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By including a "Progress Tracker" or a "Bookmark spot" would help the multiple creatives on this website who might see their stories get multiple readers but zero comments understand their areas that need growth. Without a tracker, I done know if my problem is paragraph 1 or paragraph 203.

What are other uses for this feature request?

An additional use for this feature, if possible and implemented as a 'bookmark pin' for the reader, could be used to automatically take the reader back to their last 'bookmarked' line in the manuscript if they leave the manuscript for any reason.

Follow up

For those concerned, the bookmark/progress function of the feature could be set to "show to community" or "show only to author. Again, this is simply, at its' core, a feature to help author's know where their trouble areas in the writing are.

The Team's Response

I completely understand where you are coming from and we can in the future create ANONYMISED data about progress of readers but not the way it is suggested since it violates the trust and security of a reader.

I feel this could easily be done anonymously, and function similarly to Facebook Pages, Youtube, and TikTok analytics. All the author would see is how many people read each chapter, verses how many people opened the manuscript, maybe even how often a user opens the document, but never revealing usernames. A Bookmark function could utilize the same coding and allow readers to pick up where they left off, benefitting both parties involved.

I don't like the idea of doing this without the reader knowing. What if there's an opt-in option for this feature? If readers don't want to give feedback, that is their decision.

This sounds like a fantastic idea, especially for chapters that are especially long.

While there is already a bookmark pin at the bottom, it would be nicer if you could bookmark where you are. Especially on those with long chapters.   Also really good for finding out where others stopped reading too.

As both a writer and reader. It would definitely help especially if the progress tracker for the writer acted as a bookmark for the reader. Having to scroll through from the beginning makes it harder to stay in the story.
