The Passage of Time

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation? I don't know if it's just me doing something wrong but I would like a working calendar.  Currently if I set the current date on Traith as Xymdrel 31st it doesn't reflect the passage of time by showing tomorrow that the current date would Xymdrel 32nd. I have to manually go in and change it lol and to be honest I forget more often than I remember. The last time I updated it was Rilfant 28th and that's the equivalent of March 26th and today is the first day of WorldEmber.

How does this feature request address the current situation? I would like to see functionality added so my world reflects the passage of time by showing that today is Xymdrel 31st and when I log in tomorrow it will tell me that it's Xymdrel 32nd and when i login in 6 days it's the 37th of Xymdrel. Or maybe the introduction of a world clock that tracks the hours of a day on a given world.

If this could be tied into the Timelines system somehow you would also get something like an "on this day in history" or "famous people born on this date" I truly feel something like this could breathe some much more life into our worlds

Follow up

I can understand how this wouldn't necessarily benefit everyone so maybe as a feature option able to be turned off and on or possibly as a widget or something

The Team's Response

Hello Beans   This suggestion is not taking into consideration that first of all the calendars are not meant to track time (in their current implementation) but also that in many time systems the length of day varies. So a day in their calendar would not be a calendar on our calendar. A prime example of that would be Sci-fi settings with multiple planets with many varied dating system.   In addition this is a very very very specific feature. What we can do is add a button to progress to the next day but that can already be done by clicking on the date on the top right of your world and changing the day.   In terms of a campaign, if we automate this, that will mean that during week days the date will still be going, while sessions that last multiple dates will get the calendar drastically out of sync.   Feel free to reach me on Discord if you want to further discuss this

The biggest challenge would be supporting custom calendars or alternate calendars. Not every system uses 12 month, 7 day weeks.

This would be excellent for my D&D game, and make it much easier to track when events occur across the year.

Interesting idea for increasing immersion. However, I do prefer setting the time manually because my world is mostly "paused" in the time before my story starts. So an on/off switch would be necessary.

IF that is implemented, then please as an optional thing. I would probably not be able to use the calender otherwise, because I don't want time to automatically advance while I don't have time to work on my world or use it...

Even if this exact function isn't how to solve the problem, something like this would be very welcome. Especially for roleplayers, the ability to quickly and easily advance or roll back time would be immensely useful.

Having a built in calendar would be great in order to help manage lycanthrope, time, dates, weather and more. Give it to us!!! :)

As other folks have mentioned, a manual "next day" or general timeskip buttons might be better. An automatic continuation doesn't work for a) worlds with days not 24 hours long and b) game worlds that aren't played in real time, which is most of them.

This can be problematic for worlds that aren't on a 24 hour cycle, so maybe this feature with some customization (like setting how much time needs to pass before the day changes) could work? I also like the idea of a quick button for "next day" and propose maybe even "next week" for longer time skips (i.e. took the party 2 weeks of travel to reach X city"

I would not want this. Time in my game does not move as time in the real world does.

Feels like trying to make a square peg to fit in a round whole. I'm not opposed to an optional system to reflect "real"-time in game, but it should be a separate system when that's a priority for the devs imo - it doesn't fit into the current functionality of the date/time function.

Not sure I would like it to be an automatic thing. Perhaps a "Next day" button would be nice, but the calendar system isn't really meant to be tracking time passing in it's current state.

As long as it was an optional feature (an explicit setting to allow the time to advance, otherwise current behaviour) I can see this being of benefit to role playing users. I can also understand that aligning it with fictional calendars could be problematic! As primarily a writer who wouldn't use this, I'll put some mild support behind it because I can appreciate the idea.

This is a difficult one in my opinion, for me this wouldn't be useful because I'm using World Anvil to write books and while I'm in the planning phase, I want to be able to control the date manually. This will likely also be the case in the future for me. HOWEVER, I can imagine this will be useful for others, so maybe implementing this as optional, where you can select if you want to change the date manually or have it updated automatically, could be a good idea.
