AI
When creating content for any article, provide a button or other function that allows users to use GPTChat (generative AI) to produce article content.   World Anvil could automatically insert as input to the prompt something like "Describe a undefined [type]" in addition to whatever additional input the user enters for generating the desired article content. World Anvil would then send that full prompt to GPTChat using the OpenAI API and automatically insert the response into the article content.   Example:
  1. User starts a new article using the "Building" article template and have selected "Inn" as the building Type.
  2. User clicks on a new button on the editor toolbar to "generate content with AI"
  3. Pop up prompts the user to enter any additional elements they'd like to specify in the prompt (e.g., "magical fantasy style" or "steampunk" or "squalid inn in an otherwise wealthy city located in the desert"). User can also leave this blank.
  4. User clicks "submit"
  5. World Anvil submits the full prompt to the GPTChat API ("Describe an inn. It is magical fantasy style").
  6. World Anvil inserts the response text directly into the Content editor where the user had the cursor.
I have been using GPTChat a lot to help me with content for my D&D campaign. The results are almost never perfect or ideal, but they are a much better starting point than a blank page. It is especially useful to generate a ton of content for things that may not be as important so I don't always generate interesting content (it's hard to spend time creating 30 interesting taverns and inns, or throwaway villages the party only passes through).

The Team's Response

A.I. is here to stay. With the HELP of an A.I like OpenAi's Chat GPT you can create incredible work if you use it wisely. Interfacing with an AI is probably the most important part between the interaction a human and a machine can have. There are hundreds of projects trying to do this right now and I am honestly watching the progress and evolution of those projects carefully.   You can work with an A.I and then refine and upload your work on WA if you want, I think it can be a very powerful tool that can allow for innovation and help for those that do not have someone to bounce ideas off of.   At this point WA has no plan to integrate an A.I system or train one. Doing so would be an incredibly complex and long project and there is a lot more to be done before we can even consider it.

To the people saying that all A.I.s steal others' work, that is an inaccurate assumption. Some do steal, but not all - it depends on how the A.I. is programmed. There are A.I.s that do purely original work, based off of generic principles for the prompt and theme given - you can, for instance, take text from certain text-generating A.I.s, stuff it into a plagiarism checker, and have it come out clean.   That said. I do not think WorldAnvil needs to support A.I.s directly within its framework - A.I.s take a lot of effort to code, even if it's just to embed an existing one, and the more ethical (non-stealing) ones require even more effort and time. As that time and effort would be better spent developing tools that you can't just access elsewhere in a different browser tab, I wouldn't consider A.I. integration a good use of WorldAnvil's resources and time.   A.I. are not inherently 'evil.' Nor are they inherently art/text theft (it depends on how it is programmed, people, research the individual A.I.s, stop with the reactionary knee-jerking, it's exhausting).   However, they have a time and place, and it is neither the time to embed an A.I. into WorldAnvil, nor is WorldAnvil really the place for an A.I. to begin with. It does take a bit more time to work with an A.I. that's in another browser tab, and that might impede some folks' workflows (unfortunately), but there are a great many things more pressing for WorldAnvil to dedicate the same level of resources to that this suggestion would require.

This is an interesting idea, but I'm not sure I like it. I use some AI art generators, like Artbreeder, for character portraits and a few other things, because I am not a good artist, and the results they generate are far, far better than anything I could do myself. That said, using AI to generate actual written content seems a little - off. I'm struggling to come up with a principled difference between the two, though. For now, I would say if you want to use AI content generation, go for it - it's your world, and I don't really see a huge ethical problem with it, especially if the content is labeled as generated by an AI. But direct support in WA seems unnecessary and possibly problematic.

Look, I like random generators and AI support, really hoping the existing and new AIs get their sourcing properly done ethically and legally. And when you're throwing a hundred images around for simple worldbuilding stuff, having AI support can be real useful. So me, I hope the AIs get ethical so that we can use them for support with a clear conscience.   That said, I don't think it should replace actual writing. If you want inspiration from an AI text, go ahead, I do the same with random generators. Heck, look at the Edge competition that used NerdBuilding. But having WA do the call for you? No, that just feels wrong. Copy whatever you like, but I disagree with having WA do the AI-call for you.

I like the idea but this sounds like something that'd be poorly implemented not to mention it is lazy, WA is kind of popular for it's immense creativity and having a Bot do all the work for you is not exactly putting your heart into it.

Ethics and intellectual property arguments aside, I feel that incorporating this directly into the platform risks diluting WA's brand as a place for organizing and presenting users' creative work. Procedural generation certainly has its uses, but it shouldn't be thrust front-and-center like this - not in a way where it can be easily used to spam one's way to the leader boards on challenges or drown out the content of people honing their craft the old-fashioned way.

I don't really have an opinion on this, but you should not use your email address as your username on WorldAnvil. Its not good practice to share your personal data like this.

Just look at the leaderboard of Worldember, if you think that was all hand written and nothing was generated with GPT then you're delusional. I've never generated anything with it, but it is not stealing nor damaging integrity - it is the future.   But yeah, copy paste is fine, no need to have any official support

What An Uncontrollable Dwarf said. AIs like these are unethical and they would severely damage WA's integrity in my opinion.

AIs like these are kinda unethical, they steal others work. If you're gonna steal you can at least do it yourself, or just not write about things if they are not that important

I don't see the benefit of having this officially embedded. Why not just use the AI on its own site and then copy/paste if you're keen to have it in your World Anvil articles?

If something is so uninteresting or unimportant that you can't be bothered to write about it, does it even need to be an article?
