Link Word Pronunciations/Definitions to Articles

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation? Sometimes in an article I may use a made up word.  I currently have to write an article about it, or put pronunciation and/or definition in a footnote (awkward!), or (more awkward) insert the info into the middle of the sentence.  If a reader could just hover over the word to get a popup pronunciation or definition I think it would be much easier, quicker and more helpful.

How does this feature request address the current situation?  If possible to add this feature, it would go a long way to keep the narrative flow moving, and still allow readers to quickly pick up new vocabulary.

What are other uses for this feature request? I suppose a popup feature for very short explanations as opposed to full articles (like text instead of email) might have many uses for authors to keep their readers immersed in the story.

Follow up

Got the comment regarding variables. Read the guide to variables. Read it again. And again. You may be right. If that makes my suggestion moot so be it. Unfortunately it will mean my articles will never have popup definitions. (The article explains variables, but doesn't show where or how to make them). I was hoping for something that you could type as you write, like: " # 'wrdflk' - pronounced WURD flek - means 'butter' " (I picked # because @ is taken). Sorry for my lack of skills, but I figured no harm in asking. Again, excuse me.
Yup! I'm convinced this issue already has a couple solutions. I was aware of tooltips, but it is a little clunky. Appreciate the education about variables - still feels over my head but I'll see what I can do. I'll try to be more careful before poking my head up again.

The Team's Response

Thanks for submitting this request, and for your clarifying follow up. If you're already aware of both the quick Tooltips BBCode (used like this display-text ) and the Variables (found under Advanced Tools from the global sidebar) then it seems like you have the tools you need! If it helps, once a variable is set up, you can use the SUMMON SUGGESTER to quickly input them into your articles (Type a [ and then three letters of the title or key of the variable, then just select the variable from the list!)

DMFW is absolutely right - please don't feel bad for asking. I didn't know how variables worked, and this thread helped me understand a bit more.   Moreover, I imagine it is also useful to the Devs to know where confusion or difficulties exist, even if there is technically a solution to issues.

Have a coin for starting a thread that's taught me a little bit about variables. I wouldn't stress too much about requesting something that has a solution. You're not the first person to do that and you won't be the last. Honestly there are always angles to discuss where existing functionality doesn't quite cover your case and what's more I'm sure other people reading learn from the replies. I learn a lot even from rejected suggestions.

Variables or Tool Tip text do it.

Michael Chandra's description of how variable's work is very much appreciated.

(Trying some bbcode here, so it might work as example.)   Leftside menu -> expand Advanced Tools -> Variables -> create a new collection with some identifier as prefix (e.g. pronunciation) -> open collection -> fill in the following:
    • Key: Some phrase you want (e.g. 'algor')
    • Title: The word you want tooltipped (e.g. Âlgõr)
    • Type: Term, Simple
    • Value: The description (e.g. Âlgõr: A type of butter made from Yök sap)
    • You would end up with [ var:pronunciation-algor] which can be summoned by typing [ then 3 letters then click (similar like the mention system). It would display like this: Âlgõr

Yeah, you can use variables for this (if you're a Master or above), or work around it using the tooltip function, though the latter will require you to write it out every time (as opposed to using a variable, which is more similar to what you're asking for). You can find variables in the sidebar, under the Advanced Tools section, or check out the codex article on BBcodes on how to use tooltips.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that exactly what variables are for?
