What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

At the moment, when you add images to a gallery, they appear in the order in which they were added. There is no way to re-order them manually, the way we can do with the articles list.  

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Being able to drag the images where you want them makes it easier to manage galleries. If you have a large number of images in the main folder that you wish to add to more targeted galleries, it's easier to just pull them as they are in the main gallery, but that doesn't mean they'll be in the order you wish in another gallery. Being able to drag images to re-order would make gallery management less of a pain.   For example, if I want a family gallery to appear on the head-of-household's character article, I want the husband and wife first, then the children in birth order. Right now the only way to ensure that happens is to make sure I search through the main image gallery and place the images in the character family gallery in the order I want as I add them. But having a large image gallery makes that a pain. If I can "dump" them into the character family gallery in the order they appear in the main gallery, then re-order them later, that would be ideal.

What are other uses for this feature request?

I can't think of anything. This is just a "let's make things easier" request. I'm surprised it's not already a feature.

I just realized that even if I put the images into a gallery in the order I want (by choosing them in order), they still get rearranged to alphabetical order, and this is not helpful. I can't change the filenames to include numbers at the beginning (for example: 1 Young Ari) to ensure they end up in order in one gallery, because that means they'll go out of order in another gallery. So the only easy solution to this is to make it possible to manually drag images within galleries into the order you want.

Thank you for your suggestion! We will seriously consider it for the next version of Apollo. Presently, we will have a think about how we can include this in our future update.

    Yes! Ordering should be a property of an image AND gallery in combination not anything that is specific to the image alone. I raised a similar request a while ago but that time it didn't gain any traction. Maybe this one will if there is more interest? Whilst it is true that you can control ordering to some extent by prefixing images names with numbers and that doesn't affect the displayed text (since that is a separate field), it is still not an ideal solution. I do prefix all my image names with numbers to control ordering (e.g. 010, using fixed three digits, to make sure there are enough numbers for bigger galleries and to allow for insertions), but because these number prefixes on the image name are global to ALL galleries you are forced to have the same order for the same images if they both get added to two galleries and that may not be what you want. Drag and drop within a gallery would be a very nice UI but underneath what you really need is an image weight/order that is gallery specific and a property of the gallery/image intersection record, however that is defined in the database. I've learned to live with this limitation of WA but I'm happy to back this request if there's another shot at persuading the devs to improve things :-)
