Don't feel like I need to repeat the discussion of not only the tone, entitlement, or the complexity of the task. However, I want to use this as a moment to direct a comment of support to the WA team. You guys have consistently been pushing updates and features to better the site for the community, meanwhile dealing with fires as they appear on the backend. The community are more than grateful for what you've produced over such a short time. We have such an adoration of the site as it exists and its only in Beta! You guys are doing amazing and we appreciate everything you do.
We aren't even out of Beta on the website and you are whining about the app? Grow up, just use your browser on mobile. Besides, app conversions usually make everything worse
I can assure you, app making isn't simple. Like they said, they first want to get v1 done.
WA is a complex site with a lot of functionality. They've already stated that the app won't have all that, so paring it down and determining what's useful—as well as how to make that function without everything it was originally part of—takes time. This is a small team, and they're already running the desktop site full time. App development is a whole other ballgame. We'll get it when we get it.
Appreciate the tone of this isn't overly positive, but the question is reasonable. Could we please get an update on how the app is progressing?
I think a lack of updates on this topic is something that might be worth talking about, but like others have already said, making a good app is a deceptively complicated goal. It'll be great to have, but I also think it's far from necessary when the website itself isn't even in 1.0 yet.
Creating an app is by no means a simple task. I've never made one myself but my real life job is for a market company...and one of the things we do is make apps. So I've been involved in some parts of app development (such as graphics and small bits of code) and I know how long it's taken our team to build a simply app. Even a simple app took MONTHS. Compacting a site with as many features as WA has is NOT a simple task. It's not as easy as going "hey, convert my desktop version to an app". Usually you have to entirely rebuild the features to function in the app correctly. Now, giving a TIMELINE could be a simple task but that also depends on what other things are being worked on and where the app is on the WA team's work list. But, as explained by me above (and several other people), making an app is not a simple task. This could have been addressed much more politely.
I have no experience making them but I cannot imagine mobile apps are easy to make, especially when World Anvil is such a complex site, it wouldn't be very easy to slap everything into a mobile app. Your tone is completely unnecessary and condescending; why should you be rewarded after the way you have spoken to the World Anvil Team, a very small group of people working tirelessly to provide people with a website fit for so many people's needs? I understand it may be frustrating to have not had many updates about a mobile app, but the team is currently working on an entire overhaul for the website and a mobile app simply is not a priority at the moment.
So rude and clearly they have little knowledge of how mobile apps work
This is SO RUDE. It is not something easy to do, it's building a whole app. I can't wait for the app to be released but these things take time and there is no reason to be so mean about it.
Don't like the tone of this post as its rather rude and confrontational, but I also would like an update on the mobile app. This is genuinely my most desired feature, and after hearing it was in development I've been similarly disappointed by the radio silence. I'd welcome almost any other feature being put on the back burner if it meant we had a mobile app sooner, and would welcome any possible updates about its completion, as this is the biggest current gap between the service world anvil currently offers and what I'd like from it
<<This should be a relatively simple task>> - It isn't. I honestly don't understand why it's even needed at all. And when you get it you probably won't like it... https://xkcd.com/1174/
Unnecessarily rude for what is most definitely not a "relatively simple task".
Why you gotta be so rude? Honestly, if we can wait 4 years for Good Omens Season 2, 18 months is nothing against that xD
There isn't much more to be said that hasn't already been. I get that you are frustrated, but a message to the team via an email or one of their many other forms of contact would have been a more appropriate form of posing this question. A mobile app would be a waste of development time. It won't be able to perform half as well as the website, and the time spent on that could be spent on working on other projects for the website. On top of that, World Anvil has an amazing team doing all they can to try and give everyone what they want. An enormous feat in itself, considering how many people use this service. Please be considerate of their time as much as you are your own. It isn't necessary to be so rude, especially to the people who are working so hard to bring us all the updates they have thus far.
First off, an app is not a simple task. It's requires a completely different know-how compared to developing a website. While I agree that some more communication about upcoming plans would be nice, there has been an announcement on the mobile app. It was always intended to be for after v1 of WA (Quote: "A World Anvil LITE App is already announced and it will come AFTER version 1 of World Anvil."). Version 1 of WA includes a whole redesign of the website, which is estimated to go into testing towards the end of the year iirc. So don't expect any progress on the App before mid next year at the very earliest. There are many features and requests, and just a limited amount of time on the dev team's side. It's ok to ask for an update, but this sounds very condescending.
Screw the mobile app, the other features are more important. I'm glad the feature is accepted so people stop asking for it in every 5th suggestion but I sincerely hope dev time will never be assigned to it cause it's a useless feature as you can already use the website on mobile and that will improve with every design iteration of the site. For example the current version is already pretty dope to use on mobile. I'm not showing my name cause there's too many "web illiterate" users thinking that a mobile app will change anything. Most likely it's just going to be a worse and less feature rich version of the site. It's just a sink of months of precious development time for something that's going to be used as much as whiteboards (not at all).
When you consider that World Anvil started off as a personal project, and then grew into what it is today - when you consider that its 2 people, together with a very small group of people (now), that does EVERYTHING - and when you consider all the basic functionality improvements/fixes that take priority, its easy to see why there is a delay. I 100% believe in keeping communication open, so maybe updates (or simply saying there are no updates) every so often would be nice, but until we are offering service, solutions, or funding for hiring more people, I don't think a condescending tone is appropriate. Hopefully you get an update soon, tho!
