profession linking characters

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I can write an article about a character and an article about a profession and link the character to the article about the profession so I can see which people have distinguished themselves in this profession. That is good. But I have no place of the same kind to tell what profession the character has and link to the article about the profession.   I wish there was a section for this too in the right-hand box, just as it is for e.g. current location.   How does this feature request address the current situation? If I open up an article about a character it feels natural to have the character's profession in the right column. It is something that distinguishes a character, just as much as gender, hair color, and current location.

What are other uses for this feature request?

I see the same need regarding documents. There is no default way to connect a place or a person to a document, only prose.   One of the things I love about WorldAnvil is the links. It enriches to be able to find more all the time. The more of these that can be put together with ease, or automatic, the better, in my opinion.   I really thought that I must be missing this feature because I felt that it must be there already, but if so, it is not apparent.

Follow up

The Career-field is larger amount of text and I want it in the summary to the right. I've not successfully made a link to an article with Key:: Value, which is essential to have.
Themrbeasley claims that this can be done, but that is only half-true, because this way is hidden, hard to find, and most of all, I want to do with working with my character. If the character has many professions, In need to go to several articles to update. It overly complated.
PrincessESH, a profession without a link is already possible with the key-value option. It is the one with a link that I'm looking for. It's beside the point but why wouldn't a teacher or a cook need a special article? They two very important professions in real life, and would probably be in a made-up world too.
To the Developer Team: All thumbs up! Love you!

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! In the past we've said that we won't introduce new two-way connections between articles, and we stand by that due to the database load that such connections add. However, the Character-Profession connection already exists, so we'll simply move the edit field to the Character template because we agree that it makes more sense for it to be there. This will not change how the connection is displayed in presentation view.

Makes perfect sense, especially when you have a character with an important profession that you would want people viewing the page to see the detail of. There are ways to display it but this seems more in line with things like membership of an organisation or rank.

Makes sense, but I would argue that it would be better as a mini text box (like the hair color, eye color, etc. are) than as a drop-down selection, because you might want to mention their profession without making a whole article for said profession. Like if your character is just a cook or a schoolteacher, and neither of those things are special in your world so they don't need their own articles.

This would be incredibly beneficial for linking campaign npc's to their jobs. It would also help my party in understanding the job type of the npc as many jobs in my campaign are fictional.

As others have pointed out, there are certainly ways to accomplish this, but I agree with DesNordlund that this is a simpler way to do it in line with the way the devs have already done other options.

You can already do this from the Profession article template under "Relations" and "Famous in the Field". You can select or type in a character's name and it will update the character to have that profession in their side bar. You can also do a custom addition to the sidebar if you don't want to do a profession templated article.

Honestly, adding an entry to "Current state" with something along the lines of "current profession(s)" makes a lot of sense to me, which can then be elaborated upon in the "Employment" entry we already have.

I know you can technically solve this another way, but having a dedicated profession(s) field would be extremely helpful. After all, we already have thing like "vehicle currently on board" which are far less specialized. IAnyway, adding to the sidebar always seems to add a weird space, which I don''t like and haven't figured out how to remove.)

I think the characters profession is meant to go into the career promt field - but you can always use the key::value system to add things into the sidebar:

    Profession

    Author

    , for example
