Give us the ability to create our own Era's other than BCE and CE

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently I am writing a story with multiple time eras and the time line does not fit well on the BCE and CE format that is provided. There are multiple world changing events that consitute a start of a new era.  Also they dont all end as a full year but rather at a time of an event.  Its annoying since I have to do the math to make sure the dates actually line up and then add in the title.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would allow me to not have to do some funky math and makes sure im using the correct dates I want.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Its just another feature to help keep track of time lines that are really long.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! This will be implemented as part of a planned update, but as it involves a massive overhaul of time-related features that will affect a lot of different features on the site, it will be a while until we are ready to start working on it.

This one does need some thought to deliver a solution that allows timelines to use calendars and set era dates as we'd all like but I have a number of timelines where I have to manually override every date, even though all I want is to do is offset them against UTD and I don't even need anything complicated like scaling of years (where I accept that might be more work than WA can reasonably do in terms of scope creep on the complexity). Manual derivation of all display dates on a timeline is a bit tedious and I'd love it if timelines could just do at least a simple offset calc for me at presentation time, so I just enter my dates as UTD dates and it works out the display dates. It would save me a lot of effort and eliminate any human error in deriving the display date. I'm not settled even in my own mind about the best way to do what everyone wants here, but I'm definitely putting some coins into a "can it be thought about" box...

I have odd measures of time as well. I used the option to write any text for the timeline, but overall it would be a great idea to offer the ability to be more flexible with the calendar. Not all worlds use year, months, weeks in our way.

This would be very helpful. I am not yet fully familiar with the current world anvil system, so operator error could be a thing for me. Even so, I find that when I use timelines with my current world, which possesses 3 or more eras, I list an event under lets just say 1First Era as the number and it puts it under 1 Second ERA and 1 Third Era. This event only occurred once and I can't delete it from one era without deleting it from all. Thank you world anvil team for your consideration of this problem.

Worldanvil wants UTD to be your main reader-facing timeline for some stupid reason, instead of using it as an under-the-hood reference timeline that your "real" timelines/eras connect to. If they just do that all the confusion with timelines would be fixed.
