Delete notification when read (Option)

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Whenever I click on a notification, it stays up until I manually delete the notification. While I understand some need to "save for later," there are myriad ways of doing so while acknowledging that one has read the information in the bell icon. If available, setting the option to auto-delete a notification upon click would require less clicks when a notification has been read.    TL,DR: I get triggered by unread notifications and the number next to the bell icon stays up when I've read it.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Implementing the option to auto-delete notifications upon click makes it so users require two less clicks to delete their notifications (one back to the notifications page, and one to delete them).

What are other uses for this feature request?

Personalizing the user interface options is clearly a huge step in making WA more accessible. I have terrible ADHD and I get distracted by... well to put it differently, I'm already feeling the lure of other Chrome tabs while I'm typing this.  Being able to adapt the UI to my personal preferences would be an awesome addition, and this is but one of many suggestions to make that possible!

Follow up

HI all, thank you so much for your feedback so far. I would like to re-emphasise that what I'm advocating for is an OPTION to delete-when-read. Whoever wants to use the UI as-is would be free to keep doing so! I think that the WorldAnvil UI is a lot to take in, and it may be intimidating for some users. Customizing the user experience is one way in overcoming that.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We won't implement it exactly as you suggested it, but we recognize the pain point and a future update to the notification system will address this.

I find this really distracting as well. A nice compromise would be the message remaining, but the number going away.

I've suggested in the past for just a mark as read button as I like using pins for important things but still keeping old suggestions I've agreed with in my notifications, I'd still be 100% down for something like this at some point

Although I don't see this as much of a priority, I also agree with crossesk - just have the bell only alert for unread messages.

As crosseck said, there should just be an option to clear the unread count when you read a notification, not delete everything.

I wouldn't use this as I do prefer to explicitly flag things for deletion and to see the count of any messages. I wouldn't object to an option to have the system behave that way for those that want it but like anything else it's a question of priorities for developer time and I'd rather they were working on issues I consider more interesting in the core functionality. Sorry!

I find the behavior to be constantly confusing as well. I'd propose implementing it slightly differently by tracking read/unread and showing only unread on the notification bell, as opposed to deleting it.

Maybe a delete all button would fix this issue, people who want to keep certain notifs would just never click it

There is nothing stopping you clicking the red X to remove a notification. or the pin to keep them for ever. both will lower the number next to the bell. auto removal after clicking the link would only lead to accidental loss of the notification one might want to keep.

I would lose so much on accident. Something you can do on most browsers is middle-click (the scroll wheel) on a link to open it in a new tab. That way you can open them all then hit clear notifications in one quick move.

Some of the notifications I want to hold on to for a while. It's not that big a deal to manually delete them when they stop being relevant.

Yeah, it's a little annoying to be alerted to notifications that I have actually read. Not sure it's worth the coding effort for a full upheaval, but if it were possible and easy to program the bell alert for exclusively unread notifications, that would be nicer than the current system.
