Mägoweave
It wasn’t until we lost the greatest among us, that we stretched beyond ourselves and truly accomplished the impossible.   ~ Calip of Downing, External Professor of the University of Magic

Of all the fashions worn throughout this vast world, eyes turn hungrily to the University of Magic when a heavy coin purse seeks an outfit to rival its neighbor. This is when surpassing the curious workmanship of mind and hand becomes exceedingly profitable. It is also when coin can often win the greatest of magical prizes.   Lighter than the jewel-crested gowns of the Evolu, and more flamboyant and luxurious than the regal robes of a king or queen, Mägoweave surpasses them all.   This exceedingly rare, magically-imbued garment is crafted by the most disciplined of practitioners. A skill which is affectionly sought after, yet hidden from plain sight, those who can craft such wares are worth their own weght in gold.   Why is Mägoweave so desireable?   It’s uses are limited only to the imagination of the wearer.

The Design

Mägoweave is ‘forged’, not sewn. Using a special cloth crafted from the virgin threads of Cynder Spiders, the thread is collected from the smaller arachnids before mating occurs. The threads are then immersed in a carefully guarded alchemy solution—known only by key members the University of Magic and its most trusted students. This old and complicated solution allows for the material to absorb complex incantations and enchantments more readily.
The threads are then woven into cloth, using specific paterns--which varies according to the intendd purposes of the final garment.   At first glance, mägoweave often looks dull and unflattering—usually a simple robe, fitting over most body types—but this is only a deception. For once the garment is placed upon a body, it can be shaped to the will and desires of any host. A single suit of mägoweave can shift from casual wear to the most exquisite gown or suit, including hats, gloves, and footwear to match any outfit.   In truth, mägoweave can and often does rival the finest clothing society has to offer.
Depending upon its enchantments mägoweave can self-repair, self-clean, and even shift it's density. The strength of the weave itself--which can be hardened to imitate reinforced leather, chainmail and in rare cases even plate armor--are all possible, while still keeping the cloth itself pliable, soft and comfortable to wear...oftentimes mimicking satin.

Unique Properties

The unique properties of Mägoweave lay within its magical potential.   One of the advantages of mägoweave is the pliability itself. The cloth can be imbued with the ability to shift and shape itself into virtually any fashion, taking on the outer appearance of common thread.   Such a feat means mägoweave can adapt to any tastes, matching the skill of any tailor, customizing the garment to fit any clients' custom, social standards, or particular tastes.   Very few magical tailors can correctly imbue the cloth which enables the interweaving of magic. This makes such cloth costly to forge and even more so to purchase.   The lengthy process takes months to carefully weave the fine threads into cloth to make each garment, and longer still to seal specific enchantments into the outfit itself.
Such skills have ever been in high demand and sought after by the University of Magic, both to be fostered...and controlled.   Unlike those who practice some form of the Seven Disciplines, the creation of mägoweave is a highly specialized field, and there are few who ever develop such skill to a level of acceptable proficiency.   Some of the most famous suits of mägoweave include those of the great wizard Chuck, as well as the boy-hero Wendell P. Dipmier

One of the amazing attributes of mägoweave is the transformation process. With a thought, those wearing this magical cloth can transform their attire instantly, or over the course of several minutes. Lord Bryshon here demonstrates that the flow of mägoweave is so subtle, forming thick leather gloves on his hand doesn't disturb or startle a small warding chick perched on his finger...

Applied Enchantments

The properties of mägoweave are completely dependent on the enchantments applied. What a garment can do is only limited to the power, ingenuity, and resources of the mägo applying them.   Commonly applied enchantments include:
  • Self-cleaning
  • Self-repairing (rips/tears)
  • Extended wear (immune to wear and tear)
  • Armor enhancements (to protect the wearer)
  • Enhanced senses (sight, strength, etc)
  • Dimensional pockets (able to hold large quantities of goods/money without weight)
  • Healing (accelerates the natural healing process of a wearer, including fatigue)
  • Weapon Creation (knives, swords, whips, garotes, even spears/javilins)
  • Gateways (see below...)

Evolution of Mägoweave and Those Who Wear It

The cost of crafting this unique and coveted cloth is no longer a barrier to those with non-traditional needs.   Originally made for the mägo during times of war--to preserve their lives--mägoweave has graced the bodies of royalty, dignitaries, has been given as gifts and prizes (most notable being the The Race of Seven Sons where both the Kutollum and Nocturi provided powerfully crafted suits to the victors of the race).   As the world slipped back into the shadows, new applications of mägoweave have emerged. Those who have access to wealth and resources, now use mägoweave for nefarious purposes--namely assassins and organiations of crime.   Suits have been designed to produce specific weapons. Not just concealing, but by forging weapons INTO the cloth through powerful enchantments, hosts can summon items of death to be brought forth at will, from any point of the body. Even greater, if these weapons are broken, they can be 'absorbed' back into the mägoweave, and resummoned once more, whole and intact.

Used for Crime

Few have tested the limits as to what mägoweave can be forged to do, than the eunuchs of 'Crows Nest'.
magoweave-cloak-portal.png
These robust men, posing as merchants, are known to be hired as escape routes for thieves and assassins. Enchanting their mägoweave as 'doorways' to predetermined locations, Crows can disperse themselves among crowds, providing the perfect escape from authorities.   Since mägoweave can transform to any color and shape, only Crows commonly known and recognized have ever been caught. The very presence of mägoweave has allowed he most complex crimes to be committed.   There seems to be no limit to what time, resources, and ingenuity can forge from a suit of mägoweave.

This is a great start - I'm looking forward to coming back to it when there's more information and art! :D I love the idea that the threads are collected from spiders.

Curious business, collecting that thread.   One of the things I didn't mention, is that the Cynder Spider is also bred by assassins...for its unequalled poison.   So how DO the mägo collect the thread?   ...that's the question, now, isn't it.

I am curious as to who created the first magoweave and how does the university ensure its secrets never get out?

There's no way for me to know who created the first garment of mägoweave. Mägo are a paranoid and closed-lipped lot.   Trust me--I've tried to figure that out. I'd like to know myself...especially if there are records of the very first process where the right combinations were discovered. But those books/records are not only closed, they're well guarded...by means I don't want to tamper with.   However, I do know that the University, over time, realized that the cost of these garments could be, to a large degree, be offset by creating a 'dumbed down' version of the thread and sell it to specific merchants with magical interests. People with enough skill and 'moldable' scruples to keep the mägoweave contained within reason.   The best method the University has found to keep things under relative control, is to find those students with both talent AND interest in crafting mägoweave, and then setting them up in business. Profits are shared with the school--while the lions share remains with the student, motivating them to remain in alignment with the University's wishes, or lose the supplies required to forge the clothing.

Great start for the article :D   I'm not completely sure about who do what here. Let's see if I got that right: the university is taking care with collecting the threads and weaving it into cloth (at this point they only do the same type of cloth for everyone), then they sell the clothes to magical tailors and they are the one who put diverse enchantments on them and sew them into clothes depending on the wishes of the clients. Is that correct? I think who do what could be clarify a little bit, also " This lengthy process takes months to carefully weave the fine threads into cloth to make a garment, and longer still to seal specific enchantments into the outfit itself." Make it seems that the tailors also do the weaving.   Looking forwards to see what you're going to add :D

Fantastic art! I had already left a like, so the writing was already working for me. But the art tied the whole thing together. And now I wants me some of this. I want my Mägoweave.   (I just sung that last line in my head to the tune of "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits, the "I want my MTV" part.)

Now it's time for the awkward wave.

Great artwork.
Nice layout
All in all great!
One question: by which language is the Mägoweave inspired? Sounds a bit dansk or norwegean in my ear.

This is REALLY COOL! AND I WANT SOME! Being able to change your clothes with mere thought is really fascinating. I think it's great how you went into detail about how much time and how difficult it is to make up front. Is there any sort of upkeep or energy cost to keep the magoweave functioning?

    May 27, 2021 14:07 by Jaime Buckley

Ahhhhhh, I was WONDERING when someone was going to ask that!!   No, there isn't an upkeep per se--though some spells, depending on the crafting at the time can last longer than others. But there is usually a connections to something, or a sacrifice that is made to enable the both to maintain its 'weaving'.   Runes are placed in the greatest of cloths, which draw upon and anchored to 'laws', while other of the "cheaper" cloths (if you can ever call mägoweave 'cheap'), might draw upon a from of life-force to maintain it's luster and minor functions.   The most common is a 'generational' enchantment, which is literally a 100 year spell--which has a large up front cost in materials and exertion on the part of the spell caster--but the cloth can then maintain certain spells for 100 years before needing another infusion.   I will state here that the greatest mägoweave was crafted with the life-force of a @[Lanthya Shard](material:787def1e-aebc-460e-84c1-50a7ddf1e023.   Yadda-yadda-yadda....... Hi! Congrats for this entry, glad I finally took the time to read through it near the end: this is a very complete article, and I dig the potential of htat mägoweave! As always, your art is fantastic, which is to be expected from a pro. Those representations of the weave being used as a doorway are particularly intriguing, and inspiring!   Anyway, congrats!

    Jun 4, 2021 13:59 by Jaime Buckley

Thanks, Pouaseuille....mägoweave has been a key part of my novels all the way back when the series were comic books.   Wendell's outfit is a completely unique set (he has three seemingly identical suits), which from the 'smiley' on his outfit, somewhere (center on a tee, covering a branch, a belt buckle, etc)...and the smiley comes to life, always expressing Wendell's true feelings.   It made for a great comic book--kids writing in on which expression they liked the most in a certain issue....while it took adults nearly two years to actually notice that the smiley expression was changing from page to page.   Hilarious.
