Gnolls were, in old times, mortal enemies of the humans of Duray, believed to be savage murderers created by demons. This led to frequent conflicts between the two, but as time went on, the two races became more friendly to one another, especially after uniting against the common threat of a true demonic invasion. In some areas, gnolls still distrust humans, and vice versa.
Gnolls are expert hunters, and their spellcasters are often rangers, barbarians, or clerics,. One element that contributed to tension between gnolls and humans was that gnolls willingly worship Jovac directly, but not out of evil, just a desire for success in battle.
The pack is the common unit of gnoll society, and gnolls are known to have a very strong connection and sense of loyalty to other pack members. Packs are generally composed of a small group of related families, having as little as a dozen to as many as a hundred members, and are led by either the strongest or the oldest female gnoll depending on their culture. Gnoll packs sometimes come together to form larger tribes or, in some rare situations, alliances rivalling the power of a small nation.

Gnolls are usually matriarchal, but they otherwise do not favor any gender, and others can still have important roles in their pack.
