Aurel's parents could not pay their debts, so they tried to give him up as part of the debt.

Aurel's parents owed a debt to a malicious gang, that would often come hounding them for the money. When Aurel was about 5 years old and had finally developed his power (a dangerous one), his parents offered him up to the gang to help pay their debts, saying that his power might be useful to them. They agreed, but then just decided to kill them right on the spot as they decided that time was up for them. They took Aurel and everything his parents had.
