Haruki's family owns a chain of popular music stores, specializing in guitars, bass guitars, drums, and accessories for the instruments. Haruki grew up with a pretty normal life, and when he was 18 he started working at one of his parents' local shops.
He had met Shion when they attended the same middle school. However, they went to different high schools and lost touch with each other. They met again at the music shop when Shion came in to buy some things, and since they had got along well enough back in middle school, it was easy to reconnect and they started to hang out some. One day, when Shion was talking about how his older brother, Tsubaki, wouldn't date until he does, Haruki suggested that they pretend to date so Tsubaki would feel free to go date. Shion wasn't exactly thrilled about lying to his brother, but if it meant his brother would feel free to date then he would do it. So they begin to pretend to date, and Tsubaki frees himself up to date as well, and this entire time Haruki's flirting goes right over Shion's head. Shion thinks he's just joking around, but Haruki was serious about Shion, though he didn't force Shion too much because Shion seemed anxious about dating others.
After pretending to date for about a year, Shion had a run-in with his crazy ex-boyfriend from high school, and Haruki drives him away. Haruki then learns that Shion's ex had been obsessed with Shion so much that he even stabbed Tsubaki when he thought Tsubaki would keep them apart. Shion was then too scared to be anywhere by himself, and most of the time was with his brother, though Haruki would spend time with Shion to give Tsubaki some time for himself and dates. One night when Haruki was spending the night at Shion's apartment while Tsubaki was out with a date until the next day, their relationship progressed from pretending to be dating to actually dating. Shion had finally realized his feelings for Haruki, and with some cheeky and shy flirting, he let Haruki know.
