Session 32: A Crystal Catastrophe

General Summary

Lumina’s Dragoons, time pounding on their conscience with every step, raced towards the top of the Golden Tower to rescue their friend, Eva. After having defeated two guardians of fiery light, the party reached the top of yet more stairs to find a pair of double doors, locked with no obvious means of entry. Taking a path to the right down a corridor, they entered an octagonal room filled with mirrors, reflecting a spider web of golden light. The beams seemed to enhance with each reflection, culminating into one focal point, an aggregate of all light in the room. This created a huge beam of light that seemed to almost be solid and which was directed up and out a skylight out of view. More of the strange crystalline creatures floated about doing their normal maintenance of the tower. The team attempted to bypass the complicated network of seemingly dangerous, concentrated lights that were scorching the areas they touched. Rath took a moment to draw out the rather impressive room while the Dragoons demonstrated their ability to overcome an obstacle without massive collateral damage by dancing through the light beams without being burned, mostly.   One of the Dragoons, Stanwick, lowered himself to crawl beneath a large beam that streamed down one of the eight pathways. There at the end he found a crystalline being that appeared to be broken. There was a glowing stone of some sort inside the crystalline creature. Stanwick surmised that it likely was enchanted and powering the creature. Using his mage hand, he grabbed and pulled the stone out of the worker.   Beneath the crystal entity there was another of those crystal treasure chests, beckoning him closer. It was surprisingly not trapped or locked and inside was a large, undoubtedly valuable, citrine gem the size of a dinner plate. Crawling backward toward the group, Stanwick reported his discovery and so the group decided to move down each of the several paths branching off from the main room. At the end of each was another chest containing a large citrine gem. However, Rath decided to attempt going down one of the pathways, but carelessly disrupted one of the stray beams of light, losing his balance as he was burned and bumping into the larger beam.   Trent turned into a bat and sent his dust mephit in to open the chest. Sadly, Dusty was not very acrobatic and instead shook hands with a light beam. Barely breathing, it attempted to open the treasure box. There was a dinner plate inside, but the mephit was unable to drag it. The second mephit was sent forth to help, but he too liked the light a little too much and like a moth he dove in head first. He exploded in a puff of dust. Trent exited his bat form and grabbed the citrine gem inside before returning to the group.   The team continued to go through all eight of the pathways, finding citrine gems at each paths’ end. As the Dragoons left the room, they found that they had finally attracted the crystalline creatures’ attention. Seemingly displeased with the Dragoons’ disruption, the beings came together to form not-Voltron (legally distinct, please do not sue) and began to move towards the Dragoons with ominous intent. This monstrosity was accompanied by a small fleet of crystalline repair creatures that set their repair phasers to kill.   A fierce battle ensued with tidal waves and fiery shields and swinging hammers and distorted time and many many plasma beams, ending with shattered crystal being pieces strewn about the edge of the room of reflected lights and a yet larger pile of crystals where the crystal golem once stood. Other than the mess, all that remained of the beings were their glowing lodestones. During the fight, Trent ran afoul of one of the strange beams fired from the crystal guardians and turned to crystal himself. He transformed into an elk which then became a crystal elk statue that, while likely valuable, was also very heavy. Thankfully, Elk Trent was damaged and cracked and crumbled to reveal a crystal Trent curled into the fetal position.   It was then that the Dragoons took a moment to rest and tend to their wounds, discussing their next steps. There seems to be no way out, they are no longer at their best, their resources have dwindled, and one of the young heroes is now a statue of golden crystal. Things are not looking great for Lumina’s Dragoons. What perils await them on the next floor, provided they can find a way up?   Find out next time on Legacy of the Wyrm Lords.
