Depends on the result. They can manifest as a ball of light, or they can manifest through possession of a person or object.
The biggest sign of possession is behavior unlike the person being possessed. If it's an object, it'd be that the object moves or speaks or both. Objects don't typically do that.

A banishment ritual AKA a exorcism.

Through free will. It can possess who ever they want! Granted that person doesn't have a strong mental capabilities preventing them from being possessed.

Cultural Reception

Returned ghosts and souls have had a pretty negative impact on populous. Most people either don't believe in them, or are scared completely of them. Those who are unafraid of them are those who typically work with them.
