Sulfur Ivy

In the cracks of the fractured floating city-island of Omrith there’s specks of green and tiny yellow stars. When Terra fell apart and left behind just a few islands many species went extinct. Sulfur Ivy lost its natural habitat but found a niche and a community that treasures this slightly poisonous tangly plant. It holds the earth in place, purifying the city's vaste and provides a safety net between the people of Omrith and the abyss.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Sulfur Ivy have long vines with dark green arrow-shaped leaves. A vine can grow up to ten meters long, twisting and hooking on to anything for support. The stem is slightly sticky and can give rashes if touched when wet. It has a foul taste of salt and urine. The plant is not safe for consumption but it’s effects are not harmful beyond itching marks and vomiting. Sulfur Ivy blooms multiple times a year. When conditions are met for energy reserves and humidity a cluster of small yellow flowers sprouting from the side. The star-shaped flowers bloom for two days before falling off and leaving a sticky green seed pod. It’s theorized the blooming is a way for the plant to release all the excess salts and toxic waste it has picked up from the environment.

Ecology and Habitats

Sulfur Ivy used to grow on the walls of canyons near a volcano. The ground filled with sulfur and salts which made the soil uninhabitable for other plants. The plant kept to this local area with its unique conditions. Then, the world fell apart. There are only shells left of volcanoes in the world as there’s no molten core or earth for maga to exist in. The canyon was still there, broken with several cracks leading to the open sky. Soon people stuck on the floating island made new homes here. Built houses and produced waste. With so much urine and feces coming down the walls Sulfur Ivy found a replacement for the saltpeter and other chemicals it was used to nourish itself on. It was a happy accident and people took notice of this plant that grew in the cracks. Now people use the plants actively and think about their waste management to build nets and cultivate the plant to make their home a little more stable and safe. In some places there have been successful fillings of cracks, throwing dirt and plant matter for the ivy to ground with its roots and then integrate to the natural nature bonds in the islands.
