Gwenthel

A sword forged from white steel on which a line of runes in an ancient script has been engraved. The cross-shaped guard looks molded from gold, and its hilt is wrapped in emerald colored cured leather. A cut crystal adorns the pommel at the end of the hilt.

Origin and History

The blade known as Gwenthel has been passed down the main line of House MacTaine since the family's inception. Purportedly an ancient blade, tales of its presence in daring acts of heroics—from slaying dragons to winning wars of old—was also inherited by generations of the MacTaine family.   During the Rysmarckian Conquest, House MacTaine collapsed along with its allies and holdings. After the previous Lord MacTaine's death, the remnants of the main family went into hiding with the family's eldest son, Henry MacTaine, taking ownership of the blade. In deprived anonymity, Henry MacTaine continued wielding the blade while acting as the defender of the town of Gredel with a few of his remaining retainers.   Eventually, news reached them by way of the wanderer, Tycus, that a nearby orcish camp, which was amassing numbers and intelligence of the surroundings, threatened the safety of the village. The heir to MacTaine and his colleagues answered the call to arms and joined forces with a group of adventurers that they had no more than rocky relations with. Sorely outmanned, the motley band devised a two-prong attack which would serve as the last time Gwenthel would be wielded by a MacTaine in battle. Henry MacTaine and one of his loyal knights fell while diverting the orcish forces, the white sword still in his hand at the time of his death and at the time his allies found their bodies.   Tasked with the return of Gwenthel to the last slivers of House MacTaine, the adventurers brought the blade to Vesium. They tracked down Henry's remaining family: his mother, Lady Jacqueline, and, eventually, his sister, Andrea. However, young Andrea had disappeared, and for their aid in returning the girl to her, Lady Jacqueline bequeathed the sword to the adventurers. While they succeeded in locating and reuniting Andrea with her mother, Gwenthel would not see the light of battle for some time.   Eventually, the paladin, Jester Trow, began to wield the treasured sword. Now, Gwenthel once began to again see the light of adventure, as described in once passed tales. In the hands of its new wielder, it has traversed the planes, slain a dragon, and now continues to fight the Scourge...
