Ritual of Abyssal Synthesis

The Ritual of Abyssal Synthesis was an ancient, unattributed ritual found in 409 (11 Arcane) by the kinvari studying Abyssal energy in Whorl. It offered the possibility of arcane sorcerers to be able to manage large amounts of Abyssal energy without it eroding their personal arcana and anima, which in turn would allow researchers to further test the efficacy of Abyssal energy against Eldritch energy.   The below is from a conversation with K. Nightbell, one of the scholar-sorcerers of Whorl.   “Someone--I don’t remember who, just one of the regular researchers--found an unlikely lead on a ritual format that might offer the key to rebalancing the equation in our favor. Everyone who was not a master sorcerer leapt into a flurry of additional research and preliminary experiments, while the masters continued their own experiments far from the rest of us, for mutual safety. The ritual worked flawlessly, though we could find no other source for it but the single tome that was too old to have a known author.   “In time, both groups were ready for the ultimate experiment--using the ritual to wrangle Abyssal energy against a more realistic amount of Eldritch, without the sorcerers being ground down by Abyssal or infected with Eldritch. It would involve nearly fifty of our most skilled and powerful sorcerers, with the rest of us creating layers of shields and barriers to contain any possible leaks. Cutlafrã was very serious about ensuring each of us understood the risks of our particular roles and giving people the opportunity to bow out, up to the last minute before the ritual’s commencement.   “In short, the ritual worked as intended--but it was the first time it had been performed at full power. We… broke a hole into the Abyss itself. It would have destroyed us all, no matter our precautions. On the good side, it did also extinguish the Eldritch energy it was meant to counter.   “The Abyss washed over us, and there was nothing after that--endless cold, endless dark, a crushing weight from every direction. But… I woke up. We woke up. The ritual had been cut off, shut down, before it could fully consume us.”   “That’s when we met Hyldanpev and her companions. She had heard--how, I do not know--about the ritual and had come to stop us, or so she said. She and her handful of allies fought back the raw Abyss, patched up the hole, and… I don’t know if there’s a word to encompass resuscitating someone who had drowned in nonphysical water, but she did that too.   “We… it was all a haze. We lost many, many people; most of those at the center of the ritual were gone, not even bodies left behind. Those of us who had been touched by the Abyss but survived were… changed. Stained.   “Hyldanpev said we were lucky that anyone survived at all, that we were idiots for doing what we had done without knowing the source and the author of the ritual. She confronted Cutlafrã, who was in shock but still alive, and made him swear never to do that again. None of us, her included, knew the extent of the changes we’d undergone.   “The one thing that was universal across those who were changed was the ability to use Abyssal energy without it harming our anima--anima, mind. It would still eat through our arcana, but our very souls were not at risk any longer. Some of us were affected more than others, but each of us could hear the crash and hiss of the black waves--every moment of every day, from then until now and presumably until we die, though our lifespans are one of those many unknowns.”
