Cutlafrã Freefall (formerly Cutlafrã Sunstone)
Cutlafrã Freefall, born Cutlafrã Sunstone of the sol'Aeldvari, is the nominal leader of the new race of voy'Aeldvari that he is indirectly responsible for creating. In 325 (11 Arcane), Cutlafrã began the research that would change his life by conducting a deep-dive into Abyssal magic as a potential foil for Eldritch magic.
Abyssal magic is the least-studied of all the magical energies. Where Eldritch energy consumes arcana and uses it to create more of itself, it cannot do so with Abyssal energy well or quickly. There are traces of arcana in Abyssal energy, and that much Eldritch can use as fuel for its self-replication, but Abyssal acts as a fairly solid block to the progression of the Eldritch infection.
Abyssal does have an eroding effect on Eldritch, but since all of Eldritch is identical to the rest, it is as good as cutting off a person’s arm in order to cure them of a blood fever. However, since Eldritch energy may be treated as an infestation, the possibility of using Abyssal energy in overwhelming amounts to reduce the total Eldritch that is available to spread.
K. Nightbell: It was a concept worth studying. It is always only a matter of time before the next Eldritch disaster. If we could minimize the destruction, even if we could not prevent it from occurring initially… The lead scholar’s name was--is--Cutlafrã. He gathered a group of interested scholars to help him in his research and theorizing, which was heavily informed by one deep elf’s pioneering use of Abyssal magic. Her name is Hyldanpev.Cutlafrã’s scholars took note of every story and anecdote of Hyldanpev’s experiences, in hopes of later proving or disproving the viability of the results. This went on for a few dozen years without particular incident, during which many other Aeldvari joined the growing coalition of researchers, hoping to find some clue to help defend against Eldritch magic. It was a noble goal.
K. Nightbell: Unfortunately, as soon as our group began attempting very small, tightly controlled experiments with Abyssal energy, our clan disavowed our efforts as too risky. Our access to all of our arcane equipment was revoked, save what we personally owned and could contribute. It was a short-sighted, narrow-minded stunt, but it was official, for all that we protested. As a result, Cutlafrã opened up the project to elves of any clan or race and continued the experimentation on the backs of donations and our individual resources. Initial results were very promising, and our group swelled in number to nearly five hundred participants, plus another hundred who were providing mundane services and supplies.
