Purple Gruel

Most kinvari are manabound; they require arcana to be converted into mana so they can physically consume it. When the titans destroyed civilizations across Harokin during the Shattering, one of their most deadly side effects was their enormous auras that absorbed all environmental arcana, rendering even the most powerful and skillful sorcerers helpless and swiftly starving.   Much like a body consumes food to produce anima, a body consumes mana to produce "personal" arcana, or the arcana that belongs to and is characteristic of a particular individual. And much like a person may survive for a short while without food, or without enough food, a person may survive a while without mana. It is not the lack of personal arcana that can prove fatal; it is that the body and mind have many systems that require arcana to function, and mana-starvation is a cruel and slow way to atrophy and eventually die.   Thus would be the fate of every manabound kinvar under the vacuum of arcana the titans generated, had it not been for the kinvar who invented purple gruel.   The titans had destroyed countless lives and settlements, and their continued presence meant that it was not safe to try to rebuild. Farms, ranches, orchards, fisheries--almost every larger-scale method for producing and harvesting food were suddenly impossible. Gran'Duovari stonedoms, safely built underground and often in mountainous areas that titans tended to avoid, were natural shelters for survivors of all kinvaren races. Duovari are quite good at stockpiling resources, and even a cataclysm of this degree did not entirely deplete their ability to feed themselves and the refugees.   However, their stable underground mushroom farms, blind fisheries, and harvest hives were not enough once those storehouses were empty. In order to stretch the available food while increasing their animal and plant providers as rapidly as possible, meals became relegated to bowls of watery, protein-heavy gruel that would at least keep a body going, even if it was unpalatable and demoralizing to the tongue and mind.   But with the majority of all kinvari threatened with mana starvation, a solution had to be found, and quickly. When Mana-Catcher Blooms were discovered to be able to collect and store ambient arcana, despite the titans' influence, the webs were immediately harvested and, at first, added wholesale to the gruel. Unappetizing at best, but it held mana starvation at bay for a little while longer.
