Mervari Species in Ysireth | World Anvil

Mervari

There is one more race that should be counted among the primary races, but is isolated enough from the other four that they often aren’t--the Mervari. They are the dominant aquatic race, broken into a dozen subraces based on which water creature they most resemble (dolphins, sharks, serpents, cephalopods, and fishes are the most common), but they have enough “humanoid” characteristics to be obvious kin to the primary four races. They would fall between the Aeldvari and Duovari in timeline, making them an “elder race”, and are considerably magical (and also manabound, more than Duovari but less than some Aeldvari). They are more populous than any other race on the planet, since the ocean is so much more vast than the land, and have as many cultures and kingdoms as all the other races combined. The serpentine and cephalopod Mervari are the only ones to occasionally live near enough a shoreline to have a relationship with any of the nearby land-dwellers; otherwise, only ocean sailors rarely encounter any of the Mervari, and that only when there’s a terrible storm or a sinking ship.

Interactions with Other Races

Mervari acknowledge Aeldvari as the other “powerful” race on the planet, the only one who might be able to control the land as Mervari control the seas. But the Mervari know their own strengths and numbers, so they don’t feel threatened by the Aeldvari - but they’re aware that the Aeldvari are nervous around them, which amuses them. They enjoy contact between the two races, largely because the Aeldvari are entertaining to interact with.   Mervari are aware that Duovari exist and know of the most general of the Duovari’s accomplishments, but they have no particular opinion about Duovari.   Mervari genuinely like Hymvari, if only because the Hymvari are so adorably ignorant of Nagvaren power and depth and thus treat them as equals. Many Mervari, aware of the Aeldvaren opinion of Hymvari, will be willing to trade information or teach Hymvari some of their magic (again, because they like unsettling Aeldvari). Most Mervari will aid Hymvaren ships, but they will remember slights and hold a grudge forever if a ship or fleet is ungrateful or discourteous.   Mervari are aware of Urkvari and consider them nothing more than smarter-than-usual land beasts.
