Birdfall

Xan!! Damn birds have dropped from the skies again. One hit the dog right on the head. At least we know what we're having for dinner.
— Two temperilians

Birdfalls are a rare phenomenon on Temperil. Strands of the Forever Storm are common and quite a nuisance to temperilians, but birds know to avoid them. What poses a risk to these animals are strands of electricity that break free from the ground, stabbing through the air.

Large murmurations of birds are common on Temperil, gathering in their millions high in the skies. Their navigation skills keep them far away from any storms, but they can't predict when animalistic shards of electricity rip through the crust of the planet. They rip through murmurations, cooking them in seconds. Hundreds, thousands, even millions, of birds fall to the ground in what is known as a birdfall.

Cultural Significance

For as long as temperilians have been around, birdfalls have been both a curse and a blessing. It is seen to some as a threat from the gods and others as a gift. It largely depends on their outlook on life. Birdfalls feature in most religions and pseudoreligions on Temperil and artistic interpretations of gods pelting cooked birds at people are common, as well as artworks of gods presenting freshly cooked meals to people.

Several geoglyphs resembling birdfalls can be found in the Sondon Gorge, west of Orra. They date back at least two thousand years, implying birdfalls have occurred this long, if not longer.
