The Gifts of the Gods

At the beginning of (Xillick's) Time, we, the thin-skinned, the small, had many troubles which we could not yet solve. We found the night, and the shadows, too dark. We found the winters, and the darkness, too cold. We found that the food we harvested or caught was dull and uninteresting.   Seeing this, and taking pity on their petty, weak, mortal subjects, the gods one day convened.   What could they do for we, these fools, to ease our suffering? What could they give us to smooth the way?   First, the goddess The Weaver had an idea. She hung a moon, and stars, in the sky, to make the nights less terrifying.   The god Balsar was next to bestow on us his blessing. Surely fear and boredom ought to have an enjoyable distraction - a liquid perhaps, a simple drink to take with food - wine, to ease the mind and dull the senses.   Yet still, we mortal fools grew weary of our helpless struggling.   The gods, ever patient and ever compassionate, decided to give us something else. Something truly legendary. But this one ... this one ... it would have to be a group effort.   The goddess of fate, change and innovation, The Weaver, would be needed to bless and guide the construction and distribution of this great gift.   The god of seas, rivers and skies, Njord, would have to wield them to that this gift may be contained, controlled, yet never stifled.   The god of festivities, lore and winter, Balsar, would need to help these weak creatures to remember and pass down the secret of this gift, and to entice us towards it to start with.   The god of nature and balance, The Stag, would be required to keep the mortals safe, to keep the world in order.   Lastly, this gift would need the guiding hand of Pelor, the god of light and life. He would bless it with its' myriad uses; of light, warmth, cooking and splendor.   When the gift was complete, the gods gave it the name of Fire.   And so it is, that these three Gifts were the first Gifts of the Gods to us mortals.
