The Outskirts

"The charted territories of Xaritry are kind to many. The only cruel forces are manmade works made with the exact intention of aggression and hurt. However, there is something that lies at the cusp of territory not yet charted by the citizens of Xaritry. A massive field of Asteroids that separates civilized space from the rest of the universe. A place where most daring explorers abandon or lose their vessels and die in the process and where notorious criminals or runaways make homes out of the wreckage. A settlement made so distant from civilization it would take at least a [WHERES THE SPACE CALANDER PRISMO] to reach if you started from the Temple of Rugiv or the Church of Mhiri. A place few ever try to reach because they know of the danger that lurks there. The Outskirts."
  • "Beyond The Veil: Why We Will Never Leave" (Rihr Feoh, [MAKE THE SPACE CALANDER])
The Outskirts, if you could not gather from the quote above, are your typical hard-to-reach place for the people who either wanted an escape from society or who had no choice but to flee it. Space is completely lawless in current society and those who settle within The Outkirts take full advantage of that.   The Outskirts, like Space, is a lawless place of total anarchy. However, unlike the confines of it, The Outskirts has a sense of community. Although all people who migrate there are vastly different from a variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and struggles, they all came to The Outskirts for the same reason: To Flee Society and never come back. Because of this common ground among the occupants of The Outskirts, there is a huge sense of respect and community among people. So, while people are free to act as they please and have no laws forbidding them from certain acts, they are still bound to the consequences of all actions for "all moral codes who deny consequence will eventually run out of answers." This is the mantra of the occupants.   Without laws or government, morals and ethics mean a lot to the people of The Outskirts. Because of this, one might think that they would sway or gravitate towards the Cults of Mhiri or Rugiv, but this is far from the truth. Occupants typically detest and constantly critique the belief systems both Cults follow, claiming that both make the complicated paths and answerless paradoxes of morality itself too straightforward. To them, there is no such thing as Good and Evil. There are only actions and their consequences. This causes widespread indifference to (almost) everything.   While there are Occupants of The Outskirts who hold strong opinions about things and are not typically indifferent, many who live there long-term simply stop caring about anything that has to do with opinions. They adapt very live and let-be attitudes and find no problem with turning scrapped ships into housing or using the dead passengers for food, clothing, and crafting, regardless of how barbaric treating fellow sapient species like livestock may seem. They simply do not care. In fact, some even see this as a consequence of trying to brave the areas where so many have already failed. It's not their fault that the ambitious space captain wanted to go beyond The Outskirts when it's a notoriously bad idea. And yet, strangely enough, there is one more religious belief that all occupants swear by despite their widespread indifference and their disdain towards the Warring Cults. All Outskirts occupants will swear on their lives that Starborne are real.   No matter who you talk to from The Outskirts, no matter what their beliefs or how well they know the stars, they will all tell you that Starborne are real. This is the only thing they plead is true and preach their existence as if it were a religion. Because very few if any people at all travel to The Outskirts with the intention of returning, it is unclear why they are so persistent about this fact. It could be, perhaps, that Starborne lived among The Outskirts, or that The Outskirts is where they hide when they disappear from society. No one can be certain.
