Souls and Death

Every living thing has a soul, even plants and animals. Intelligent mortals have two parts to their soul, simpler creatures only have one. There is much debate about what has the second part and what doesn't. The first part is common to all living things, it is made up of pure energy, it is what gives life to the body. This is the stuff that the gods are made up of. When a mortal dies, this energy goes to the god and makes them more powerful.   The second part of the soul is makes each person unique, it holds the personality, likes and dislikes. This energy is redistributed to new souls after death. The energy is shredded, but bits and pieces of personality do make it through the process from time to time. This allows to reincarnation of specific personalities. It is very rare for a soul to make it through the process of death intact.   When a person dies, their soul detaches from the body and transitions into the grey place between worlds, the realm of the God of Death. It is a misty, indistinct place that leads to a gate, where the God of Death ushers each soul onto the next phase. Before the gate the God of Death asks what god the mortal served in life, if any. If the person had dedicated their soul, the God of Death takes his great fan and sweeps the life energy away from them, and sends it to that god.   The remaining personality half of the soul then passes through the gate, and into the barren landscape that surrounds The Maw. The Maw is the final passage of death. It is a round tunnel glowing with orange and red light, lined with sharp, jagged rocks that tear the soul into little pieces so that they can be reused. Souls circle The Maw, drawn in by the current. Not even the God of Death could tell you what is on the other side. All that is known is that souls go in, and when a new mortal is born, a new soul flies into them with their first breath.
