Quantum Space Folding

"We're using technology so ancient, so beyond our understanding, like they're toys. Caution would've been the best approach - now we must learn before we make our mistake."

Quantum Space Folding, colloquially known as Space Folding, is a poorly understood mechanism utilized by the Gates to facilitate the development and creation of stable Spacial Tears (Wormholes) between two linked Gates. Currently, very little is known about how the Gates produce these effects; research is on-going, due to the disturbing fact that modern Human civilization relies on science that they know almost nothing about.

Manifestation

Wormholes were long since theorized to be a possibility within standard reality by Earth-born scientists such as Albert Einstein. It was believed that wormholes were the most ideal form of inter-system travel; their existence, whilst not observed, was predicted and supported by both mathematics and physics. In fact, it was believed the first serious studies into Wormhole technology had begun on Earth - just a year before the Tarrasque arrived.   As such, although it has yet to be seen, it is theorized that natural wormholes can occur due to similar mechanisms that allow the Gates to function. However, as so far, the only manifestations of a wormhole are within a primed Gate.   The wormhole is described as having a surface to it, like a puddle or a pool of still water, with the image of the other side of the wormhole in view. This barrier, for all intents and purposes, is traversable by both matter and energy. When an object passes through a barrier, it is said to have "crossed the threshold." At current levels of understanding, there is no space between the wormhole entrance and exit - instead, they are one, and they appear to be a 2d object. The wormhole can only be accessed through one side - called the Active side - of a Gate; when a wormhole is opened, the other side of the gate - called the Passive side - cannot be passed through, like there is an invisible barrier present, but otherwise appears like regular space.   Many researchers believe that the Gates contain several safety mechanisms that prevent catastrophic failure. For example, many have questioned whether gravitational effects carry through Gates - and as such, could this lead to two stars on opposing sides of Gates colliding with one another, or worse still be ejected away from their original galactic orbit? After much testing, it has been established that Gravity does not pass through the Gate - this directly opposes other evidence that all energy can pass through the Gate. As such, scientists generally agreed that there must be advanced mechanisms in place - or perhaps even a naturally occurring phenomenon - that prevents stars from being attracted to each other through a gate.

Author's Notes

Quantum Space Folding is probably the closest I plan on taking this world out of our own reality (though, we'll see when we begin to talk about Project Marathon :P). The concept is based very much in our own reality, or at least our own mathematics - as mentioned, Einstein and his colleagues predicted that it would be possible to Fold space-time in order to puncture a direct hole between two spaces. Think back to the famous (or perhaps infamous) folded paper experiment - the concept that's shown there very much applies to What We Left Behind.   In the end, however, I'm not a scientist, so I don't expect the explanations given here to be exactly correct to neither our current understanding nor reality; however, I've tried to consider things as realistically as possible, and for my universe, that'll do.
