Borophagus

Borophagus is a fearsome dog-like predator, native to Westlo. In the 800 or so years since humanfolk came to the region, this apex predator has seen its habitat shrink greatly so that now it is only found in the northern Western Forest and Giant Hills.   Weighing upwards of 120kg and standing 1.5 metres tall, these terrifying animals have incredible bite strength, capable of crunching through bone quite easily. They are also faster in a straight line than many of its prey, meaning that meeting one of these creatures in the open is a dangerous encounter for anyone.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The main thing that people tend to notice about the borophagus is the mouth. The head of the creature is large, its shoulders are imposing and muscular, its back legs propel it forward like a greyhound ... but its teeth and mouth! Its jaws!   It is a terrifying image that is never forgotten once seen. Mainly because if you see it, you don't live long enough to forget it.

Growth Rate & Stages

Borophagus pups are fairly cute, but quickly grow to adult monster status. The bite of the pup is rarely fatal on its own, but further complications (usually the bite of its mother) will often result in death.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Not only is the borophagus a capable hunter and eater of raw meat, it also employs strategies to get the most from every kill, resisting scavengers and defending their food. Their ability to crunch bone allows them to access marrow, meaning that they can eat practically every part of an animal.   They will generally not eat gnomes or drow, the only folk they are likely to encounter, as these are, respectively, too small and too stringy to be worth chasing. However, hungry borophaguses will eat anything.
