Cold Iron

Fiend Bane

Cold Iron is the name given to a dull grey metal mined deep in the Underdark, known for its effectiveness against fiends and fey of all kinds. A highly guarded material by the races of the Underdark, Cold Iron is hard to come by on the surface, but the Dwarves do their best to supply it to their trading partners.

Material Characteristics

Dull grey in color, with little metallic shine and even when heated seems colder to the touch than it should be.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Abnormally cold to the touch, hence the name

Geology & Geography

Found deep within the Underdark, in lightless caverns and deep pockets of ore. The Drow have a large abundance of the metal, since it is found in the deep layers of the Underdark where they make their empire, as do the Illithids, whose secret, deep temple-cities are found near abundant pockets of Cold Iron.

Origin & Source

Unknown, but thought to be hold-overs from the time when the outer planes were connected to Wandrei, and Cold Iron was created in the Lower Planes.

History & Usage

Discovery

First discovered and used by the Illithids, for everyday products and weapons, and then by the Drow for militaristic use.

Everyday use

Used mostly by the military for weapons

Refinement

Refined just like iron, but at cooler temperatures
