Temple of the Faceless One

The Temple of the Faceless One is an old ruined temple within the Crying Woods of Paida. It is believed to be one of the oldest temples in Nesia. No one is quite sure how or why it fell to ruin but the once luxurious and grand temple has crumbled and been reclaimed by the forest around it. The text on the wall appears to be written in a combination of deep speech and celestial, though it has been hard to decipher what it actually says even through magical means.   The Temple has been fairly hard for researchers to get near. First, it is deep within the Crying Woods and many have been known to get lost on the way there or succumb to the forest. Secondly, spending more than eight hours near the temple brings on a sense of paranoia and hallucinations. The temple is eerily silent and not even the sound of birds or the rustling of tree leaves can be heard. Lastly, those who have spent an extensive amount of time at the temple all have seen to go missing. Their bodies never found.

Purpose / Function

From the limited research acquire, the temple appears to have been built in order to pay respect and worship the Faceless One. This appears to have done through rituals and ceremonies, often requiring some kind of blood sacrifice. Rare minerals were offered, including Dragon Glass which was believed to be even rarer at the time.

History

Rumors and legends talk about a flourishing village centered around the temple. There are still signs of life at one point from clay bowls to dolls that seem to be tucked away in the earth of the Crying Woods. The legend states that the inhabitants displeased the Faceless One and paid the ultimate price. There are no bones or skeletal remains around or near the temple and any bodies that are found are much more recent than the temple itself. Even people who have gone missing in recent history do not return as a corpse later down the line.   Scholars believe that the cracked portrait of the Faceless One that splits evenly down the middle is an omen of what the villagers faced. These people leaving no trace of their exit gives an even grimmer reminder of the Faceless One's power. The area continues to lack sound and people cannot seem to speak near the temple in a radius of 50 feet. Druids and natives to Paida will tell you the land is both cursed and blessed.
