The Sovereign Obelisk, Cradle of the Five-Cities

Despite being the only intact structure dating back to at least the Godsfel as well as being home to the largest metropolis on the continent, little is really known about the Sovereign Obelisk itself. The structure itself hinders exploration and experimentation in two important ways.

Firstly, the azurite it is made from is a nearly indestructable material with certain properties in common with both metal and stone. It is highly resistant to any attempt to obtain a sample. Such samples, often taken from the remains of other ruins made of the same material, produce few findings from any known forms of analysis.

Secondly, the Sovereign Obelisk is home to a variety of automatons of numerous sizes and configurations. Some appear to perform maintenance on the overall structure, while others, known as constables, exist only to prevent anyone from harming or altering the existing structure as well as blocking passage into the deeper halls and corridors within.

Purpose / Function

The true purpose of the Sovereign Obelisk may never be known. It has been proven, however, that the each of the structures arms perfectly align with a ley line eminating from the central spire. Further more, the nexus formed by these five ley lines emits far less power, by several orders of magnitude, than calculations predict. The central spire at the heart of the nexus bleeds much of the missing energy straight up into the sky, while the vast majority of it is sunk deep into the earth beneath it. To this day, no one has managed to penetrate into the bowels of the structure to discover where the energy is actually going or to what purpose.

Architecture

The structure is made from a substance known as azurite, a milky white stone with deep blue striations that faintly glow. Strangely enough, the obelisk appears to be made from one continuous piece of azurite, with no block seams or joints to be found anywhere along its surface or within the available areas of the interior.

The central spire extends some three leagues (qv 9 miles) into the air, while the towers at the end of each arm rise only a single league (qv 3 miles) into the sky. The arms themselves are nearly seven leagues (qv twenty miles) in length with a width of eight furlongs (qv 1 mile). These measurements are precisely uniform across the entire obelisk. Strangely enough, the enormous archways under the arms not only vary in height, width, and spacing along a single arm, they are completely non-uniform across all of the arms, with no measurement for a single arch matching any other within the whole.
